  • Larry Rhodes just sent over this sweet inside look at Nation BMX in Sayreville, NJ. Alfredo is high as a kite during the interviews, but he sure does pull a sweet 540 during the riding section. Enjoy....

  • FBM’S KICKED OUT OF JAPAN AD

  • I’m not sure of the year on this one, but that’s not really important. We’ll say several years back. Anyways, Stew Johnson and Props were still producing the Passport video series, and Stew had arranged for a roadtrip through Japan, featuring American and Japanese riders, including George Dossantos and Edwin Delarosa.

So George and Edwin boarded a plane in NYC and made the 12+ hour trip to Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan. But when they arrived, there were problems. I think Edwin hadn’t fully sorted out his passport or something like that. But regardless, the duo were not allowed through Customs. In fact, they had to pay an exorbitant amount of money to stay in a guarded hotel room that night, and were then put back on a plane and sent home the following morning. The entire time, Stew was waiting just on the other side of Customs, wondering what the heck was happening.

So George and Edwin arrive back in the U.S., and word spreads throughout the BMX world of their unfortunate travel luck. At the time, George was riding for FBM, so Crandall put two and two together, and made one of the funniest FBM ads most of us had ever seen (featured above.) Notice how the font from the ad even looks like something from a Godzilla poster?

I’ve been asking Crandall for a while now if he had a lo-res copy of the ad, and he finally came through with it today. So enjoy this funny little walk down memory lane courtesy of FBM and George Dossantos, and be sure to sort out your passport documents before you fly…

You can order Holeshot 3 online here, and you can be their MySpace friend here. Do both!

  • RANDOM PHOTO OF THE DAY

  • Last week, amid trying to pack up my apartment and moving into a new one, Shitluck’s Leland Thurman, Mike Tag and Chester Blacksmith came to visit. I did my best to entertain them, but there were a few times when I had to drop the kids off at the pool and do adult-type things, such as signing leases, getting keys copied and buying paint at Home Depot. On the one particular day when we were supposed to be picking up the keys to the new place, Leland, Chester and Tag decided to go visit the Statue of Liberty. I dropped them off at the Light Rail, wished them luck and drove away.

One week later, the above photo shows up in my inbox. Leave it to Leland Thurman to get caught with his pants down en route from Jersey City to Battery Park in Manhattan…

  • GET WELL JIMMY

Take care dude.

  • FBM GHETTO BIG AIR CHALLENGE

  • FBM and Recycles Bike Shop in Richmond, VA are hosting a bike party in October. Here’s what Steve Crandall had to say about the event: “We decided to build a ramp out of pallets ala ghetto comp style, and invite some wild characters to come check it out. Basically we are going to have an all day ramp/bowl jam, a bunny hop comp, that is all open to anyone to come ride, have some bands play, and sort of have a pre register/invite list of apes to ride a 15 foot roll in, to a sketchy as all getout 12 foot quarter, for best trick an High Air. Mat Hoffman agreed to come hang out, and judge the event, Chad Kagy got stoked and told some of his buddies, and it looks like its going to be a hoot. Some Details are still in progress, But Leland is going to have a Shitluck Hot Dog (veggie dog?) Eating contest, Darryl Nau will be on hand to help emcee the party, and bring some of his own flavor on board for excitement, and who knows what else. Stay Tuned for more details.” Sounds like fun to me!

  • REVIEW: FREESTYLIN’ GENERATION F

  • For a time, my relationship with the former Wizard Publications staff (comprised mainly of Mark Lewman, Andy Jenkins, Spike Jonze) was not that different from that of a child and a divorced parent. Starting in the mid ‘80s, I was brought into BMX and reared on the backs of any BMX magazine I could find. There were more than a few at the time, but none that captured the independent spirit of the newfound “sport” as much as Freestylin’ Magazine (and later on, it’s descendent Go: The Rider’s Manual.)

Each month, Freestylin’ taught me how to ride, dared me to not fall in line with the trends of the day and opened up a world of possibilities for myself and its thousands of readers throughout the world. After Freestylin’ morphed into Go, things stayed much the same; I’d get a new issue, drool over Homeless Bikes ads and channel the energy of the magazine into my riding and my life. But the times were changing. Neon died, uniforms became a racing-only thing and the term “street riding” entered the vernacular as a fresh alternative to flatland and ramps. Along with these changes came an economic recession, and because of that, BMX died sometime in late 1990. It wasn’t an official death, but things were changing too fast for a downtrodden BMX industry to cope. Go went from 100 pages, down to 80, and finally ceased publication with volume 2, issue 2, at 76 pages. I guess BMX Plus! was still around, but I don’t think anyone ever expected Plus to fill the gap left by the end of Wizard Publications.

Afterwards, the staff of Wizard, the same people that had essentially schooled me in early BMX, left BMX behind and moved on. The following period, which lasted for a few years through the early ‘90s, was a pretty dark time for BMX. If you still rode or did anything to support the scene, it was only because you loved it dearly and held it sacred. Which is why I equated the staff of Freestylin’ Magazine with a divorced parent. Here one minute, gone the next, with no explanation for the kid from New Jersey that washed dishes in a kosher delicatessen to pay for his two-year subscription to Go. (I was baffled for a few months, checking my mailbox daily for a magazine that had already folded. But I digress...) Now I understand we all need to do what we have to do to pay the bills, but I was still pretty surprised that Mark Lewman, Andy Jenkins and Spike Jonze moved on away from BMX so easily. To be honest, I felt betrayed by the same people that had brought me into this world. But I eventually learned to approach the Wizard staff’s departure from BMX in a different light. Yes, they had moved on, but their influence had not. In fact, their influence would become their greatest legacy.

A new chapter of BMX had begun, and neither Freestylin’ or Go were the right outlets to document the changing times. Thankfully, fellow readers of both Freestylin’ and Go were ready, willing and able to pick up where Wizard had left off. And if not for the direct influence of the staff of Wizard Publications, magazines such as Ride, Dig and Ride UK would not have existed. There was a direct line of influence on the first pages of these magazines. The torch had officially been passed, and we all owed a debt of gratitude to the staff of Wizard for lighting a fire that refused to die. Still, I always hoped for one last visit from the parent that had unexpectedly left.

And twenty years later, my hopes have been answered. A final issue of Freestylin’ from Mark Lewman, Andy Jenkins, Spike Jonze and assorted Wizard staff members. Except the magazine is now a perfect bound, 153-page, limited edition book, full of iconic imagery from the pages of Freestylin’, where are they now interviews from a plethora of ‘80s pros, lifestyle shots and an archive of magazine covers. To be honest, it’s awesome, encompassing more ‘80s BMX influence within its pages than any other effort that’s been released thus far. And the imagery contained within strikes a major nostalgic cord. From one 1988 photo of Chris Lashua gliding a steamroller, I can tell you that I seriously drooled over the photo for hours, doing everything within my power to mimic both the trick and Lashua’s style of dress. I think there’s a certain point in one’s teen-age life when influence is imprinted within the brain at a more dramatic rate than any other time in one’s life, and for many, that point began with Freestylin’. So seeing the photos within the Freestlylin’ book is going to evoke a long overdue rush of emotions. I don’t know how else to put it, but there’s a scattered mess of us throughout the world that were raised on the words and images of Freestylin’ Magazine. And the very fact that Freestylin’ ended so abruptly and left many of us wondering what happened seems to have helped freeze a classic moment in time. An influential era that hasn’t been touched and explored this thoroughly in twenty years.

Safe to say, the influence is officially back. It never actually went away, but the proverbial final chapter was never written until now. One final epilogue from Freestylin’. One last visit from an icon. Glad we got over that divorce thing… -Brian Tunney

  • SAVE CATTY

  • It looks like the Catty Woods Trails are in danger of being closed again. According to accounts on both the Axelrad and PAWoods sites, the locals have 90 days to secure insurance and erect a fence around the trails. So naturally, they’re doing everything they can to raise funds, including tossing the idea of an amateur comp at the trails sometime in September around.

For those of you not in the know, Catty Woods are a long-running set of trails in the Bethlehem, PA area. The land where the trails have been built on is owned by the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority, and even though the trails have existed for 19 years without any problems, there’s still a question of liability.

You can read about the dilemma on the Morning Call site, Axelrad or PAWoods, and if you’ve got any ideas on how to help, or feel like donating money to build a fence, get in touch through those sites as well.

Also, here’s the newest vid from Janis featuring some of the latest building progress at Catty.

Thanks to Nuno from Illegal Bike Co. for the words and Paulo Martins for getting the info over to us. Congrats on your new arrival to the family as well!

The first round of the BMX Series presented by Eastpak - Campeonato Nacional de BMX Freestyle 2008, happened on July 5-6, in Refojos, Santo Tirso, on the North of Portugal.

Saturday was the qualifying day, for beginners, amateurs and pros. Unfortunately, it was a bad day for Fly’s Javier Ortega. He suffered a bad crash which resulted in a broken wrist. After all the action, the day ended with a big dinner with all the riders.

The finals happened on Sunday. In the beginner class, third place went to Cristiano Barbosa, second to Emanuel Mendes Pombal and first to Márcio Rodrigues. In amateur, third place went to Renato Guimarães, second to António Miranda and in first to Jason Batista. In the pro class, the first three places were occupied by the Spanish Armada; Cristian Toledo in third, Miguel Cuesta (Ilegal Bike Co.) in second and Perico (Fly Bikes) in first. All three are from Málaga, Spain.

This was the first of four rounds of the 2008 BMX Series presented by Eastpak. The BMX Series presented by Eastapak is sponsored by Eastpak e Carhartt, with the support from Red Bull, Junta de Freguesia de Refojos, Câmara Municipal de Lagos, Câmara Municipal de Torres Vedras, Cnema, Ilegal, Esterisco, Odyssey e a Apametal, Zona Radical, Zásguru tv,Onbike,Indetil and organization by MFOBMX.

  • THE 20TH YEAR OF THE FAT JAM APPROACHES

  • The Netherland’s DeJong brothers are throwing their 20th Fat Jam this coming weekend in Aarle-Rixtel, Holland. I don’t know where to start with these guys. They’ve been down for BMX from day one, and they’ve probably judged a comp you’ve ridden in, made a zine you’ve read or shoved a beer down your throat in hopes that you’d join the Hardcore Drinking Team. They also know how to have fun. Rather that summarize what makes the Fat Jam such an important event in BMX, I figured I’d let Bart DeJong do the talking. So what follows is everything you’d ever need to know about the Fat BMX Jam. Also, we mentioned last week that Cologne, Germany’s Quest For Rescue was playing the jam. Well, they’ve since had to cancel, but don’t let that stop you from making the trek to the Netherlands. Read on…

What: FAT-JAM The 20th edition of the FAT-JAM is going to take place on 9 August next. The FAT-JAM was started in 1987 with the first street jam on the RollerRink in Aarle-Rixtel. A sheet of plywood was nailed against the basketball pole, some pallets were placed against the Renault 4, a washing machine made for an obstacle and together with the few ramps we had to formed a real ghetto park. But the statement was made. Ride for fun and don’t worry about the contest. We can say that for the 20th edition the intention is still the same.

Who: The FAT-JAM has been a De Jong Bro cooperation from the start. The jam is organized under the FAT BMX Promotions Foundation umbrella, a non-profit organization. Participating and spectating at the FAT-JAM has always been free of charge. Life is expensive as it is. We want people to enjoy the jam without ripping them off. Anybody with a BMX bike is welcome to ride but nobody has to ride. No schedule, no pressure.

Where: Since the first edition of the FAT-JAM which was a street event, the jam has moved to the Sugar Hills trails at the Valkendijk in Aarle-Rixtel, Netherlands. No more space for street obstacles and the mini vert ramp is gone too. What remains are some sandy trails and a grass field. It’s really not much but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun. For the 20th edition the focus is on two jumps: The TransVer (huge transfer jump) and the Big Trick jump (wooden take-off, huge sand landing). The Snafu 8.6 race is on as well as a distance jump where you have to land on your front wheel first. Ride your brains out!

Why: Why not? Getting together with riders who think the same way is always good. With the positive attitude leaning towards party mode it can only mean that good times are ahead of us. Bring the BBQ, bring the drinks, there is no security that will tell you that you cannot bring it in at the FAT-JAM. Remember, we want to keep it cheap for everyone.

When: No need to be there on Friday or on Saturday before noon. That doesn’t mean you’re not welcome to lend a hand if you get there early. The FAT-JAM kicks off in the afternoon on Saturday 9 August at the Sugar Hills Trails in Aarle-Rixtel and will go until darkness sets in and the BBQ’s have cooled off. Then it’s time for the real festivities in OJA, the ultimate party place that has been there for us since day one as well. With Dan Dryers (Germany) and a surprise act plus DJ, it is going to be a wild one. OJA opens up at around 8pm and has a limited capacity but as long as the police doesn’t show up a whole lot of people will fit inside. Make sure you get there in time. Location: Schoolstraat 2, Aarle-Rixtel.

Accomodation: Now this is can be a problem so we ask you to look into it before you get to the FAT-JAM. There are a few camp-sites around that are a few miles away from the festivities. It’s the best option. You will sleep through the night when you roll out of OJA, even on a thin foam mattrass. Sleeping in cars is illegal but we have yet to experience tickets for that at the FAT-JAM. That does not mean that we did not warn you. Hotels can be found in Helmond (5km) or Eindhoven (15km) so do your google searching for camp-sites and accomodations around Aarle-Rixte

  • THIS IS THE ORDER

  • Relentless Energy Drink have teamed up with Erasmus Partners and Vince Madeiros (editor of Huck Magazine) to produce a new limited edition lifestyle magazine dubbed This Is The Order. The new mag aims to celebrate artistry and diversity in the action sports world.

An electronic version of the magazine will also be available for viewing and download from the end of July at http://www.relentlessenergy.com as well.

  • MADERA JEFF KOCSIS VID

  • I’m going to have to make a judgement call here. There’s too many people in BMX with the ‘Lil’ tag in front of their names, and most of them are actually taller than me. NJ’s Jeff Kocsis included. A few years ago, he actually was “Lil,” but I don’t think the tag really fits anymore, so instead, I’m going to direct everyone to this one-day vid featuring Madera’s Big Jeff Kocsis. The vid is here.

  • BRUCE CRISMAN INTERVIEW

  • Schnell from At The End of the Road caught up with Bruce Crisman to learn more about Shola, filming and Bruce’s riding. Check the interview here.

  • RANDOMNESS FROM RUSSIA

  • My friend Alex from Russia sent some pics of his riding scene and bros, along with some unfortunate news about his hand, which he broke and had to have doctors insert a metal plate into. As for the riders, according to Alex, “This is my second family! They are very good guys, and we enjoy riding together!”

I guess it goes to show, the Russian BMX scene is growing by leaps and bounds. Yeah, some language and cultural differences might separate us, but at the end of the day, it’s riding with friends that matter. I guess you could say that’s a universal truth in BMX. Enjoy the photos!

  • 2-HIP CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

  • This October marks the 25th anniversary of 2-Hip, and Ron Wilkerson has some big plans underway, including the 2-Hip Meet The Street 25 Year Jam. Coming to Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay on the weekend of October 11-12, 2008, the 2-Hip Meet The Street will consist of two classes (great, really great), with great riders winning prizes and really great riders gunning for $5,000 in prize money. Obstacles include a car, a wallride, shopping carts, ledges, kitchen sinks and more. 2-Hip Meet The Street comps were the first of their kind, and the riding that went down at the early MTS comps was legendary, so it’s nice to see the Meet The Street name coming to life again.

Signup and pre-register on the 2-Hip site, where you’ll also find additional info in the upcoming weeks…

  • PIVOTAL CONVERTOR FROM ECLAT

  • éclat have been working with a guy called Andy Cheney on parts development, and recently noticed the new S&M Pivotal converter. Turns out Andy was working on something similar, so we thought it might interest people to check another perspective. We’ve also asked Andy to comment on his version of the converter, since he’s been working on it the past few months now. Here’s what Andy had to say:

“Sometimes we all have good ideas. And in our industry, where there’s only so much room for improvement, so we can end up with the same idea and not even know it. That’s why we were pretty impressed with S&M’s Pivotal converter. You see, we’d been working on the same thing since April, played with samples, got through testing and have just sorted the tooling. See what you think. Ours is different in that bolts from up inside the seatpost. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t even consider cutting a hole in the seat. It’s not a bad idea, but we ain’t into copying. And why did we do ours?Cos we hate that maaassive block of plaggy under the pivotals. Railed seats are sweet, and pivotal posts rock, behold our version. Ah...nearly forgot: weights: our pivotal converter + railed seat + pivotal post, is less than, a pivotal post + pivotal seat.” -Andy Cheney

  • WETHEPEOPLE COMPLETES

  • Yup, it’s that time of year again. Prepare for previews of upcoming ranges a plenty in the coming weeks. First up, WeThePeople have their ‘09 range of complete bikes online for everyone to check out. Click here and check the line in a handy dandy Flash flipbook....

  • CATCH QUEST FOR RESCUE LIVE

  • Cologne, Germany’s own Quest For Rescue is playing a rare live show this coming August at the upcoming 20th Anniversary Fat Jam. The jam is scheduled for August 9th in Aarle-Rixtel, Holland. And oh yeah, the Fat Jam, twenty years deep now, is gonna be a good ole time for everyone involved. The DeJong brothers know how to party and this is a pretty huge milestone for the duo. Check the Fat site for more details.

And in case I need to fill you in on Quest For Rescue, it’s a band with some BMX roots. (WeThePeople’s Klaus Dyba plays guitar in QFR.) QFR has been featured in Road Fools and Props a few times, and you can sample some of their music on their MySpace page.

  • MUTINY SITE SLIGHT OVERHAUL

  • The Mutiny site just got a bit of a facelift, and they’ve moved. I’m really busy at the X-Games. Otherwise, I’d have some wise ass remark to make. Sorry Gaz.

    Here’s the new Mutiny address:

    Mutiny Bikes

  • LIVI JAM 08

  • Colin Weir sent over info for the 2008 Livi Jam, going down this weekend on August 2 at the world famous Livingston skatepark in Livingston, Scotland. According to Colin, “If it rains we’ll get drunk and if not, we’ll get drunk and do tricks on our bikes. It’s win win really.”

All the comps featured on the flyer will happen, weather and time permitting, with a whole host of other ideas buzzing around as well to make this a true celebration of why people ride little kids bikes...FUN! Do you wear the tighest jeans? the baggiest? Will you be the first to bleed? Do you have a wet t-shirt? Are the most female looking rider without owning a muff? Can you do stunts with flat tyres? Can you snake everyone and anyone? Is your bike the heaviest? If so you may be walking away with some bitchin’ prizes and the admiration and respect of your fellow riders. This is a DSAB jam people! Not a fuckhole, wankass, trend whore gay fest so show us some originality and creativity and you will be rewarded in due course. Tell your friends, burds, dogs, uncles and your maw. Check the Mirraco site for details on their new bar pad. And please don’t ask about the weight…

  • ORCHID TRAIL JAM PHOTOS

  • While the entire Internet was screaming “Empire of Dirt!” last week, Orchid Footwear was busy organizing their own grassroots trail jam in suburban Philly. The turnout was great, the trails were dialed, the rain held out and Philly area photographer Aaron Buckley documented the scene. I guess you could say dirt takes all shapes. Check the Orchid site for some great photos from the jam, including Geoff Slattery (above), who’s back on the bike following an injury.

  • PROTOTYPE FBM HAT?

  • Steve Crandall sent over some new pics of a prototype FBM hat. I was trying to think of a way to connect the new hat imagery with some memorable quotes from Top Gun ("Jester’s dead!"), but nothing’s coming to mind. So instead, just enjoy Mickey getting rad in and around the Ithaca, NY area. I need to go in-jest a late lunch now…

  • COREY BOHAN TAKES THE EOD WIN

  • Red Bull’s Empire of Dirt is officially done, and Giant’s Corey Bohan took home the win, followed closely by MacNeil’s Gary Young in second place, Australia’s Dane Searle in third and United rider/event creator Kye Forte in fourth place.

Here’s word from Kye on the outcome: “At this event I’m a rider and an event organiser so it was hard to juggle both, especially after qualifying first yesterday. On the start ramp, for the Super Final, there was a lot of pressure on me and I knew Corey, Gary and Dane were going to go full out to take top spot. I tried to step it up, took a risk, and crashed in my run but it was an amazing event and I’m really happy everyone had such a good time. It was rad.”

Following last year’s cancellation due to rain and poor weather conditions, this year’s comp and course exceeded everyone’s expectations. 5,000 spectators showed up to witness the event, with 33 riders from around the world doing battle on the EOD course (which didn’t see one drop of rain the entire week.)

The construction of the Red Bull Empire of Dirt course took three months alone and it is the only one of its kind on the planet. Of course (no pun intended), now comes the rough part; dismantling it.

If you’re in the UK, you can watch the Empire of Dirt in a one hour Freesports on 4 program on Channel 4 on Sunday 3rd August at 8am (Channel 4+1 at 9am). And if not, there’s footage all over the Internet by now. We’ll also have some coverage of the event featuring photos by our own Ricky Adam in issue 66, which we’re currently hard at work on right now…
