I was rooting through an old shoe box of belongings for my printer software package a few night's ago when I happened across a few stickers that brought me way back. You don't see them as much anymore, but ten years ago, signature stickers were a big deal. If you had one, or any of your friends had one, it was about as big as getting a signature frame nowadays. Well, OK, that analogy is a little over the top, but it was cool thing regardless.
First up in my abbreviated collection (mind you, this is from one shoe box of many) is a UGP Mark Losey sticker. In case you don't know, Mark was the former editor/photographer of Ride BMX. He helped guide Ride out of its infancy and shaped it into a huge magazine that gained worldwide respect in a matter of a few short years. After leaving Ride a few years ago, he spearheaded Vital BMX, and also serves as the Nike 6.0 team mentor. But before all that, Mark was a student in Florida, attending photography school and riding in between classes. The result of his tenure in Florida, well one anyways, is this UGP signature sticker...
Next up is Jimmy Levan's XS sticker. XS was the parts and components brand from Schwinn. It boasted a huge team, including Jimmy, Dig's own Sandy Carson, Gonz, Mike Griffin and Troy McMurray among others. XS's parts were amazing for the time, and if you search hard on the BMX message boards, you'll still find people looking for XS cranks. Anyways, XS made these stickers for each of its team riders. I know I have Sandy's and Troy's somewhere, I just need to find them. Bonus info: Jimmy used to cut out his name from these stickers and put them on his mailbox of the house he lived in after the XS program ended...
I have a Huffy Mike Ardelean sticker around somewhere, in which Mike's likeness resembles Bobby Hill from King of the Hill more than Mike, but for Mike's sanity, I will not reveal that sticker here...
