  • TIGHT SET-UP!: THE RANDOM WRENCH V.2

  • posted 7 months, 2 weeks ago

  • Interview with Josh Suhre and Sherwin Ghaffarkhan...

Why a V2 of the infamous Random Wrench?
Josh: The original Random Wrench was designed a few years before Sherwin and I were working at DK. I think the original idea was great. We took some of the ideas and feedback from over the years and employed it into a matured, more restrained form.

Sherwin: Since the first Random Wrench was designed several years ago, products have changed and thus so should the products used to maintain them.

Was there a goal when you set out to redesign the RW?
Josh: On my side of the design process, I was focused initially on the ergonomics and aesthetics of the form, then the information design and packaging. We wanted something in the end that would decisively be an improvement over the popular original version.

Sherwin: It seems in the end, the goal is to have it be something that you would use yourself. In this case that you can use to fix your bicycle or fend off zombies…

Do you have a specific design process (start with sketches, or research, then work your way forward)?
Josh: Personally, I began with research about feedback on the original Random Wrench, tool forms, market competition, and general purpose of the tool. From there I begin sketching some forms, working with Sherwin to develop something we are both happy with. Once a prototype is in our hands, we analyze it, test it, and make the appropriate changes.

Sherwin: There is a specific approach that I take when designing something.  To keep things short:  1. Problem/Need identification 2. Research/Analysis to fully define the first statement 3. Define a goal, so there is something to work towards.4. Then start sketching and working on concepts…share ideas with Josh to come up with a design. 5. Draw and have it Prototyped. 6. Test/Evaluate the prototype. 7. Mix thoroughly, rinse, repeat.

Are the sockets and keys it comes with interchangeable (like if i run a different size can i swap something out and have it fit generally in side the wrench?)
Sherwin: Yes, the Random Wrench is interchangeable.  It can fit a socket as large as a 19 mm.

What role did form and ergonomics play in the development?
Josh: One of the most important aspects for me was redesigning the form for the V2 so it would be easier to carry with when riding (or conform to your backpack compartments). I think the modest / simple form accomplishes that. In regards to ergonomics, we slimmed the handle down from one of the prototypes to have a circumference that was more ergonomically appropriate for the tool’s target user group. The end cap was designed to be a more functional and integrated part of the tool’s form, offering a spoke wrench with three sizes.

Is there a significant weight difference between the RW V1 and V2?
Sherwin: I have no idea? Take a poop then work on your bicycle will be the quickest way to drop weight if you are concerned about that while maintaining.

Anything worth mentioning about the metal/materials?
Sherwin: Not really. No need to bog people down with what they don’t care about.

    Anything about RW V2 graphics?
Josh: I felt it was appropriate to develop a logo for the Random Wrench V2, since it has become somewhat of an iconic tool in BMX. Similar to the original, I created informational graphics about how the sockets and keys go together inside the form. The logo and informational graphics were laser etched on the exterior of the tool.

What’s the story with the “hang tag” style packaging.
Josh: The concept behind the hang tag was to provide information about what the new V2 Random Wrench offers to the user. The tag is DK branded for recognition, and provides the opportunity for interaction in a retail environment. The customer can unfold and explore the progressing information within the panels of the tag. The hang tag provides a more exclusive visual presence for the product in a retail environment.

How much does a V2 cost?
    Sherwin: It retails around $32.99
