  • FREESTYLIN’ MAG TALES

  • Once upon a time, very occasional Dig contributor Steve Emig (AKA The White Bear) was briefly employed by Freestylin’ Magazine as part of its editorial staff. Following the release of the recent Freestylin book, The White Bear was prompted to write down some of his memories from his tenure at the magazine, including office hi-jinks and hopefully, much more to come. So far, there’s a pretty amusing tale about a cat box which you can now read about over on the Freestylin’ Mag Tales blog. Check it here.

  • WHO DOESN’T LOVE BLOOPERS?

  • Mutiny recently alerted me to the fact that there are some Randy Taylor “blooper” photos over on the Mutiny site courtesy Walter Peringer. I’ve been told to “feel free to link it,” so that’s what I’m doing. And by the way, the above photo is cropped, so you can’t see the blooper. But it is right here.

  • SIMPEL SESSION ‘09

  • I know everyone’s probably switching into holiday mode and putting the BMX contest season on the back burner for the time being, but just a few weeks after Xmas, the 2009 season starts off with a huge bang in Estonia.

Yup, the Simpel Session is back. Returning to Tallinn, Estonia on the weekend of January 16-18, 2009, this is the ninth installment of the Simpel Session series. Last year’s comp hosted more than 10,000 spectators and definitely demonstrated that BMX comps can be fun, progressive and exciting while still maintaining a laid back vibe.

Here’s some specifics from Risto, the Simpel Session organizer:

“We’ll be holding a street jam as well as the best trick contest. Prize purse will contain royalties for all together 13 500€. Course design is made once again by Nate Wessel, who has been doing the job for the past 3 years. Let’s face is though, Mr. Wessel has again overdone himself. The course will be amazing. Contest will be again hosted by none other than Mr Catfish. The jam format itself means its relaxed as always, no pressure, just fun times on a bike. Several good parties, a bike film festival, over all just good times… The event will take place in Tallinn, the medieval capital of Estonia. Considering a population of almost a half a million people, Tallinn has plenty of nightclubs, bars and cheap joints to suit all and every taste. The Session will host 3 official parties  - one for every night of the event. You have probably missed your flight over here if you’re not having fun in Tallinn!”

For more info on all things Simpel Session check http://www.simpelsession.com

  • FLAT MATTERS ONLINE

  • Effraim Catlow started up a blog just the other day devoted to flatland. So far, they’ve already covered a four-part debate on the pros and cons of scuffing, with insight from pros such as Terry Adams, James White and more. Check it here.

  • BSD LETS GO BUELLING JAM / PARTY!

  • A reminder about the BSD LET’S GO BUELLING PARTY! Finals will run from 6pm – 8pm in hall 1 and the BUEL!”

  • NIKI CROFT INTERVIEW

  • I know its late on the eve of a US holiday, and I should probably be out celebrating, but I’ve waiting on my cat to come in from his nightly excursions and thought I might let everyone know about the new Niki Croft interview on the Orchid Footwear site. Niki rides for Orchid UK, shreds everything in his path and has a fondness for both the Lord Voelker video and Youth of Today. Basically, Niki is welcome to stay at my house whenever he pleases. Check the interview on the Orchid site here.

  • CHRIS MOELLER INTERVIEW

  • I don’t know how I missed this, but I was doing some “research” on the history of trails frames for the upcoming trails issue and I happened across a really great, in-depth interview with S&M’s Chris Moeller. If you were ever curious about the history of S&M Bikes and its various chapters on up to the present, this interview would be a good place to start. Check it here.

  • STRICTLY BMX LACES

  • Australia’s own Strictly BMX recently got some new shoe laces made, featuring the ever popular bike chain print. Now on sale, good for shoes, makeshift belts or whatever you might need them for. You can get ahold of them through Strictly BMX. Available in gold and white.

  • KINK HOLIDAY CATALOG

  • Kink just posted a flipbook preview of their holiday range, which includes a new frame dubbed The Outfit, exclusive team photos from Walter Peringer, glow in the dark grips and more. But sadly, the Burger Kink t-shirt has been omitted from the line. Check it here.

  • BRYCE TOOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

  • I haven’t known Bryce Toole for too long. Actually, we’ve only met like twice, but I think he’s a sweet dude that can definitely ride a bike well. And on top of that, he’s a budding photographer, complete with a photo blog that he’s been updating since earlier this month. I selected the above photo to preview based on a recommendation from Cory Nastazio. Check Bryce’s site here.

  • BANNED IN ORLANDO T-SHIRTS NOW AVAILABLE

  • Sparky’s Distribution in Florida is now offering up Banned In Orlando t-shirts for the masses. According to Sparky’s, “Banned is a group of people doing things their own way. Regardless of any trend or fashion. A constant urge for adrenaline, danger, fun, and taking things as far as we can. Always down for hanging out and a good time, and risking life and limb on our bikes. 100% down for the cause, and keeping things and real as it gets.”

They also make videos, of which I’ve posted the trailer below. And they’re on MySpace too…

  • FACTION BIKE COMPANY?

  • I noticed an unusual ad in the latest issue of Ride UK last night, and decided to do some poking around on the Internet. The ad was for a BMX company called Faction, which manufactures 22” frames, components and complete bikes. Not only that, they boast a team that includes Jason Davies (not the UK vert legend like I had hoped for), skate vet Jeff Grosso and a park rider named Jack Daniels. The bikes look interesting to say the least. And you can check the Faction site here.

  • NEW FBM HOODIES/OLD VIDS

  • FBM just posted up some news about some new hoodies that just arrived. These are designed to keep the warm in, which is quite useful this time of year. Three new styles to choose from, featuring some classic logos in the FBM lineage. On top of that, they’ve uploaded Don’t Buy This to their Vimeo page, both the promo and the full 30-minute version. I’ve embedded the promo version below, but check out the full one on the FBM site if you’ve got nothing else to do on this rainy Tuesday....

  • CODY JENNINGS ON EASTERN

  • Cody Jennings is now riding for Eastern. Here’s the press release from Larry Ramsey:

Eastern Bikes has added Cody Jennings to its team. You may have seen Cody in the 2x4 Video and know that he as entertaining off his bike as he is on. I’ve known Cody for a long time now and am excited having him on the team to add his own style and mayhem to Eastern Bikes. We are currently filming for Easterns’ first ever team video so you will see him in that. He lives close to Wiz so those two will be riding together and getting plenty of footage. For more info on Cody go to http://www.easternbikes.com

  • SPOKE WRENCH VALVE CAP?

  • Parts that double as tools are pretty sweet. Sure, not everyone in the world uses valve caps, but if you’re going to, DK now offers valve caps that double as spoke wrenches. So in the event that you ding your rim, you can unscrew your DK valve cap and true your wheel enough to get you home. Now if we could only get Odyssey to refine and reintroduce the bike pump seat post… Check the new valve cap here.

  • NEWNESS FROM STANDARD BYKES

  • Standard Bykes just posted a monster update of newly stocked frames, forks, components and softgoods, including race frames and forks in both 20” and 24” options, along with a new range of freestyle frames. As with all things Standard, if there’s something you want on your frame that they don’t offer, they will customize your frame for you, including custom sizes, colors and more. Check the new stuff here.

And for no other reason besides the fact that he was always awesome, here’s Luc-E’s part from Standard Country.

  • WRITING ON THE WALL WRAP UP

  • By now, you’ve hopefully checked out each rider’s section from the brand new Nike 6.0 video Writing On The Wall, which will see a full premiere online tomorrow morning on the Nike 6.0 site, but we’ve got a few pics from Saturday night’s premiere, courtesy of Freedom BMX’s Kay Clauberg. Pictured above is the US Nike 6.0 team (from left to right, Nigel Sylvester, Mike Spinner, Dennis Enarson and Garrett Reynolds), who all produced amazingly awesome sections for the video, along with French Nike 6.0 rider Maxime Charveron, making friends with one of the employees from the aircraft carrier where the premiere was held in San Diego. In case you haven’t checked out the new vid yet, you can watch the full video online here in just a few hours. It’s well worth your time…

  • CHECK OUT THE HOFFMAN SCARAB AL

  • My favorite BMX industry insider named after an ‘80s hip-hop icon, Chuck D of Hoffman Bikes, sent over some words and info about a new complete in their range, the Hoffman Scarab AL. Here’s the official word:

“The “AL” complete bike range is great for riders seeking a pro-level bike minus the pro-level price tag. Built around a Hoffman Bikes team-designed 100% cro-mo frame with integrated head tube and Mid B/B, the “AL” series features 100% cro-mo 8” rise HB handlebars, compact 25/9 drive-train with fully sealed cassette hub, Alienation rims, HB Skidmark and Kenda tires, 3-piece cro-mo tubular cranks and HB’s brand new Pivotal Repeater Circle seat and Pivotal seat-post. From the ground up, the “AL” series is designed to withstand the demands of modern day BMX riding.

Specifics include a 20.5” top tube, 74.5 degree head angle, 14” chainstays and a complete weight of 28 lbs. Check Hoffman Bikes for more info.

  • NEW PEGS FROM FLY BIKES

  • Fly Bikes have two new styles of pegs currently being shipped to distros all over the world. There’s a cr-mo peg for street, heavy duty grinds and whatever you can throw at it, plus an aluminum 7075 model for light street and park. According to Fly’s David Quesada, “Some Fly riders like Sergio even use the cromoly one on the rear and the aluminum on the front.” So you can switch it up, or mix and match your peg setup if need be.

Both models are outside machined on the top of the peg to reduce weight, with a thick bottom for more durability (cr-mo model is 2.5mm thick, aluminum is 3.5mm thick at bottom.) Weight per peg is as follows:

    Aluminum 7075: 85 grs. (2.9 oz.)
    Cromoly 4130: 170 grs. (5.8 oz.)

Cromoly version is available in black only. Aluminum 7075 is available in black, grey, dark red and coffee, which I’m drinking right now…

  • ONE MORE BREW

  • Project 5, in conjunction with Seventies Distribution, are working on a new DVD project to help carry the UK scene through the harsh winter months. The plan is to contact a number of filmers throughout the UK, and ask each one to film a video section of up to five minutes. Following a January 15 deadline, the sections will be compiled onto one DVD and sold through Seventies.

According to Gez at Project 5, “The aim of this DVD is to try and show people where the UK scene is at, blow up some riders that may otherwise never get seen, bring together the scene as a whole and also try and give people something positive to focus on over the harsh winter months. This is an opportunity to unite the UK BMX scene!”

The DVD will be available through Seventies in February 2009. For more info, or to get involved, check the above flyer.

  • F*ck Gas is a bike collective from the Louisville, KY area, created by members of Shitluck Clothing and Lattitude Zine. • KYE FORTE AND DECOY BOWL

  • The new Decoy Bowl in Newton Abbot, Devon UK is now open. We spoke to the guy who made it all happen, Mr Kye Forte…

Can you describe how the bowl came about?
We have been campaigning for the skate park for over 5 years, we have had the trails on site for over 10 years so the skate park is just an addition to the facility. Planning permission and consent were probably the biggest hurdles we had to get over, not to mention the fund raising.

Is the bowl absolutely what you wanted or did you have to compromise any?
We originally drew up a bigger design, kinda our ideal skate-park, it got cut back to what was realistic within our budget & space. But the final outcome is amazing, loads of lines. The company that we choose Gravity, were really keen to work with our group so we got the best end result we could.

I noticed the concrete is slightly rough its not super smooth. Is it just for bikes?
When the builders were on site, they really listened to our comments, the main thing was that we didn’t want it slippery. They didn’t over polish the surface, meaning it stayed grippy, there’s no need for slippery parks! We are going to let skateboarders use the park, but it is a predominately a bike park. All the money raised was by the same riders who have kept the trails dialed for all these years. It’s funny to see who comes out the woodwork when a free skate-park suddenly appears.

What about lighting so its rideable at night?
There’s no lighting on site yet, so for the time being it will only be open during daylight hours. Perhaps that will be part of phase two?

Decoy is well know for its trails scene. Are you concerned that the bowl may take away from the trails. Like will more people ditch riding the trails in favor of the bowl?
The bowl will steal riders away from the jumps, but the the true builders/riders will session the trails come spring time, there’s no substitute for the jumps. We fenced off the trails as part of the project also, so hopefully we can-have more of a structured set up there as well encourage some new riders to come up.

How was the money raised for the bowl?
We raised the money by applying for grants, fund raising, myself going to endless meeting with various council members just straight up arguing the cause. Luckily for us Nikki Toms who works for our local council really got behind the project, she helped set us up as a club so we were eligible to receive funding, filled out forms, all sorts. we really can’t thank her enough, she made the park a reality.

Now Decoy has a race track, trails and a bowl. Everything besides a water park! Are there any future plans for the place?
I would like to continue the bowls development, perhaps add some new section over the next year or two? Maybe a street section that resembles all the spots around the area? That way we could ride street hassle free. There are loads of plans, who knows!

  • MIKE SPINNER: WRITING ON THE WALL

  • When I first met a younger Mike Spinner, rocking cut-off Dickies, riding a bike with a non-existent seatpost and what’s since come to be one of his trademarks, a ancient topload DK stem that resembles a brick, I was impressed to say the least. Mike had skills, but there was a lot more to his riding than flips and spins. Mike could do it all, from impossibly difficult tech lines that involved tailwhip nosepicks or backwards manuals, to burly yet-unseen box jump moves such as 1080s, along with vert-inspired tricks such as tailwhip 540s. Not only that; Mike was personable and appreciative of everything that had come his way (which, at the time, was just a few free bikes and a few free trips to contests). Earlier this year, in between a very hectic contest schedule, Spinner set out to film for the inaugural Nike 6.0 video, Writing On The Wall. What follows is a short discussion with Spinner about the filming process and his section, plus info on how you can see it here first on DIGBMX.com.

IS THE NIKE 6.0 VIDEO YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL VIDEO PART?
This is gonna be my first ever official video part. It’s crazy. I’ve always had fun doing tons of Web edits over the years. It was always like, “Oo yea, my friend that films is gonna be at the skatepark today, so we’ll film some stuff, then put it online.” I’ve actually never really had a street section before, even in a Web edit.

WHAT WENT INTO FILMING YOUR SECTION? WAS IT TOUGH?
This was like a challenge for me for sure. I knew Dennis, Garrett and Nigel have all done video parts before, but we all ride pretty different. I pretty much had a list of things in my head that I wanted to do. It was awesome filming with Glenn PP [Milligan.] He has worked on a ton of videos in the past, and he knows what looks good and what doesn’t. I would always ask him what he thought…

WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH?
To try and get a lot of street clips I was happy with. One thing I realized with filming for a video is that it’s all about quality, not quantity. We had one year, and we traveled the world. Plus I got to film at Dave Mirra’s warehouse, ride street in Miami. Those are my local spots and I had stuff I always wanted to get done. And this video pushed me to do it.

IS IT MORE STREET OR PARK?
I’d say 50/50, which I’m stoked on. I’m not trying to hide my park riding. I love riding skateparks, but it was definitely important to me to get a bunch of street clips I was stoked on!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MORE; FILMING VIDEOS OR RIDING IN COMPS?
I would have to say contests. For me, it’s awesome to know when a contest is. I just ride a ton and work on new tricks before hand. Most contests that I ride in are 60 seconds, where you try to do your best tricks. I love that feeling when you actually can do everything. All the time and effort you’ve been putting into getting ready for the contest all paid off at that moment. It’s the best feeling.

WHERE DID YOU TRAVEL TO FILM FOR THE NIKE VID?
Oh my god. Arizona, Vegas, Miami, Spain, China, Australia, Greenville, Orlando, Atlanta. I probably missed a few places too…

WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM FILMING?
One clip, I spent two hours on two different days filming for. I’ve never done that in my life. A few years ago, I would maybe spend a half hour or 45 minutes trying to get a trick done, but Glenn was filming and I put pressure on myself knowing that I wanted to get this clip done. It was like 100 degrees out in Miami. I fell a bunch of times trying this one line, and I was definitely freaking out. But once again, I have to give credit to Glenn. He knew what he was doing.

ARE YOU PSYCHED ON THE OUTCOME?
Sooo stoked! Nobody understands, this video shows me the best I think it can. It shows my personality and what I can do on my bike at the moment. When filming for this video, I knew it was gonna be hard because I had a ton of ideas in my head, but it doesn’t always transfer into the riding. But I had so much fun filming this video and hanging out with the whole team all year. I could not have asked for a better outcome!

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MIKE SPINNER ON THE VIDEO FRONT FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF WRITING ON THE WALL?
Flip at Albe’s asked me about filming for the Albe’s video. I definitely want to take filming for a video slow just for the fact that I don’t want to overdo it. Quality over quantity for sure. I’m just excited to go to Cali to see the video all put together. I hope everybody is as stoked on it as I am!

On Saturday November 22, 2008, Spinner’s section will be exclusively available for viewing here on DIGBMX.com, starting at 10 PM(PST).

The entire Writing on the Wall movie will then be available as a free download beginning from 10 AM on Monday Nov 24th at www.nike6.com/writingonthewall

We also have a Spinner-related competition running right now where you can win the frame Mike rides (Mirraco Black Pearl) and the shoes he wears! (Nike Insurgents)
    - Click right here to check it out and try your luck!

  • SAVAGE BMX

They’re also organizing raffles utilizing donated products, with proceeds going to riders in need, so if you’re a company looking to donate or a rider in need of assistance with your medical bills, SavageBMX wants to hear from you. Savage is also presenting the Black Friday Jam going down in Philly later this month. Check the flyer above…

  • NEW CAPTAIN STEM

  • Snafu sent over some info about the new Morgan Wade signature stem dubbed the Captain. I’m assuming the name comes from the fact that if you put the word “Captain” in front of “Morgan,” you get ”Captain Morgan,” but I could be wrong. Anyways, the Captain stem is constructed of four-axis CNC machined billet 6061 aluminum with a hollow center bore and CNC relief for weight reduction. The frontload stem also features grade-8 6mm allen bolts, removable Mobeus tabs, a 55mm reach and colors of black, silver, blue, gold, purple and copper. Weight without tabs is 9.98 oz., and if this stem works good enough for Morgan Wade, then I’m pretty sure it can work for anyone…

  • AITKEN GOES HOME

  • Following lengthy hospital stays in both PA and Utah, Mike Aitken walked out of the hospital on his own yesterday. There’s still some more steps in recovery to take, but it looks like Mike is gonna pull through and eventually ride again. Collective sighs of relief all around. Glad you’re OK Mike! Check the full story here.

  • GET WELL SOON ALEXIS

  • Dig friend/Soul contributor/one of the world’s most awesome flatlanders, France’s own Alexis Desolneux was seriously injured riding flatland last month. I guess backwards whiplashes (which is what Alexis is pictured doing in the above Carhartt ad) can be dangerous. From all of us here at Dig, we wish you a speedy recovery dude. If you wanna read Alexis’ first-hand account of the crash and the pretty gnarly medical procedure that followed, check it here.

Oh yeah, in case anyone was curious, Alexis was also the guy that pioneered hang-5 grinds down handrails…

  • DAKOTA ROCHE GRIPS

  • It looks like Dakota Roche is the latest Fit rider to get some signature grips from Fit. And the above Fit ad might also be the only time I’ve ever seen Dakota without a hat on…

  • FBM PRESENTS…

  • Normally, when people send me vids, I download them and re-upload them to fit into our classically styled Mpora video box to the right of the news. Normally, vids are 20-50 mb, and the download takes a few minutes if that. FBM’s latest online addition is huge (even after condensing it), so I’m gonna spare myself some time and show the embedded copy below. Here’s what Crandall had to say about it: “Filmed in 93 and 94, on a camera we would sign out from the public library, this video features riding from Mike Tag, Stew Johnson, Magilla, Steve Crandall, Jody Donelly, Colin Winkelman, Groundchuck, Kris Bennett, Scoty Yoquelet, Kevin Landis, Josh Orr and many more...” Enjoy.

  • NEW VINYL WEBSITE

  • Strangely enough, I just got some new vinyl through the mail, followed by this e-mail about a new Vinyl BMX Web site. They’re actually not connected at all; I’m just reading more into it than I should. Anyways, there’s news, a new summer ‘08 vid and more to check out here from Vinyl.

  • NEW SEVENTIES SITE

  • Seventies Distribution just overhauled their Web site, featuring a brand new warehouse edit from Niki Croft, links to all of their distroed brands and the chance to order their ‘08/’09 print catalog. Check it here.

  • T-1 CAMERA HANDLE SOLUTION

  • A few years ago, T-1 along with a guy named Harry The Hat started manufacturing homemade camera handles that made filming someone while riding a bike a lot easier with less chances of dropping the camera. Since then, T-1 received a cease and desist order while Harry The Hat entered the post-modern art world, leaving a hole in the world of BMX-inspired video camera handles. But T-1 has a new, simple solution up on their site utilizing some old bars and a tripod. Check it here.

  • BMX PARTY TIME

  • Admittedly, I thought this was going to be a BMX version of Cobrasnake, but it’s not. BMX Party Time is in fact an innovative links/feed directory with a straight forward news blog as well. It’s also customizable, allowing you to pick what sites you want your news from. Here’s what the Admin had to say about the new site:

“BMXPartyTime.com allows you to select websites from a comprehensive directory and it returns the latest updates from all of the websites you have chosen. If you check off 100 different websites, then BMXPartyTime.com will give you updates from 100 different websites. It will also give you links to pages that automatically selects and/or opens your chosen websites; great for bookmarking and homepages (sample links at the bottom). For detailed instructions, please visit: http://www.bmxpartytime.com/1986/03/21/instructions/

Aside from the links/feeds directory, BMXPartyTime.com also has a straight-forward news blog that’s kept up-to-date by multiple party goers. Some may like this alternative news option, others may find it superflous. If you don’t like it, we have a link available which bypasses it entirely (which consequently loads much faster): http://www.bmxpartytime.com/quickie/”

To join the party, download the LATEST version of Firefox, Safari or Opera and visit http://www.BMXPartyTime.com.

  • FBM VIDEO AWESOMENESS

  • FBM recently added some classic vids from the FBM library to their Vimeo page, including Albert St. and FBM’s 10-Year Promo. Do yourself a favor and watch both often. I’ve embedded the promo below. It’s sweet, so enjoy. Wilbur Istreet?

  • DELCO

  • Schnell of At The End of the Road fame sent over word about a new video/clothing company he’s putting together entitled Delco. Here’s the official word:

I’m back on the long haul to making another BMX video/company. It’s named after the county we are all from and will mostly be centering around the local scene in Philly and the suburbs with only one real goal: to put out a fun video and some sweet t-shirts and stickers to go with it. No team members, no bullshit, no budget. Just dudes on bikes having fun the way its supposed to be. If anyone has extra footage or is hungry to film, hit me up.

    And do the hitting here.

  • JEFF PHOTO DOT NET

  • Dig contributor Jeff Allen has a new photography Web site up, featuring tons of interesting samples of his work, including the above cover from issue 59. Check it here.

  • LET’S GO BUELLING

  • For the past few years, the Scottish scene has held a year-end BMX in Scotland Awards party, celebrating the highlights of the year and partying the night away. This year, it’s back, only it’s moved from a bar to Unit 23 Skatepark in Dumbarton, Scotland. The event goes down on November 29, 2008, starting at 2 PM and winding into the night. For more info, hit up the BSD site…

  • OSATO VIDEORAMA

  • Another new Dave Osato video on the Web. This one is Dave’s Videorama section for WeThePeople. Check it here.

  • MUTINY WHAT THE F

  • Mutiny just posted a new vid dubbed What The F, featuring Josh Bedford in Austin, and his nightly riding session on the way to the bar. From there, it gets a little weird, but I won’t give anything away. You’ll just have to watch it for yourself here.

  • NEW JJ PALMERE VIDEO

  • What gives? JJ Palmere has been laid up for a few months but is still coming through with new video parts. Check it out on the Orchid site, where you can watch it in either the Orchid player or a Quicktime version…

  • HB’S NEW ‘09 CIRRUS EL

  • Hoffman Bikes sent over word about a new complete bike in their range, the Cirrus EL. Features include an integrated headset, Mid BB, 25/9 gearing, sealed cassette hub with sealed 9t driver and full cro-mo 3-piece tubular cranks, built around a Hoffman Bikes Cirrus frame with 20.25” top tube, HB cr-mo forks and HB 8” rise Dinky bars. But that’s not all, the Cirrus additionally features a few Hoffman branded parts, such as the HB Dinky sprocket, HB’s legendary Skidmark tires and HB Repeater seat. Get it while the getting is good cause the Cirrus EL is way too much bike for the price…

  • CHECK OUT VIOLATE CLOTHING

  • Violate Clothing is a new-ish UK-based clothing brand geared towards the action sports industry, with strong ties to both the music and art scenes. Violate offers clothing for women and men, featuring organic cottons and tons of styles and designs to choose from. There’s no BMX team to boast of as of yet, but if you’re into the designs and like the feel of organic cotton, I’d hit up the Violate Clothing Web site and get in touch. Violate was also recently featured in Nuts Magazine…

  • THE END OF BELOE

  • Rumors of the end of Beloe Footwear started spreading last week after team rider Jim Cielencki was spotted online riding in Nike SB’s. And following some online speculation, Beloe’s Brian Osborne was forced to confirm the fact that Beloe Footwear had indeed come to an end, leaving team riders Jim Cielecki, Nathan Williams, Kevin Kiraly and Karl Poynter without a shoe sponsor. What follows is Brian’s official but unfortunate statement on the topic:

“So since the news leaked out last week, I thought that I would let everyone know what’s up. Beloe Footwear is finished. It was really sudden, and literally came out of nowhere. I don’t really know how to explain it without getting into a gray legal area, so I won’t. Bottom line, it’s gone. It won’t be back. I don’t know what I’m going to do, but will keep everyone posted. Thanks for all the support that you have given over the last year and a half. For the most part, it was a lot of fun, and I was really looking forward to producing the spring 09 product line. Sorry to disappoint.”

No official word on where Osborne or the former team riders are headed as of yet, but you can find some impressive deals on Beloe’s range via the Albe’s site if you’re looking to stock up on what could’ve been. I can personally attest to the fact that the Jim C. signature Motto shoe is way comfy. RIP Beloe…

  • DO WE HAVE CLEARANCE CLARENCE?

  • The Changing World of Music Clearance: by Brian Tunney

For more than a few years, I worked for Props helping them to clear music for use in their videos. When I first started out, Props’ Marco Massei gave me a stack of contracts and let me loose in the world of independent music. That was 1998 though, when people still went to record stores, purchased CDs and by and large supported the independent music scene more so than today. And it worked pretty easy. I would find some songs I liked, e-mail or call to ask permission from the label, get a contract signed and that was that. People would hear the music in the video, hopefully like what they hear and in turn purchase the music. Props had permission, the band and label got free exposure; it was a win/win situation for everybody.

Nowadays, times have drastically changed. It’s next to impossible for record labels (both major and independent) to sell records due to illegal downloading, file sharing and the rise of digital music. So record labels have had to make cutbacks. Either they’ve dramatically scaled back on their release schedule, or they’ve come to look for other ways in which they can make money on releasing a record. For most, that avenue has come in the form of music licensing. Couple this occurrence alongside the fact that more BMX videos are being made now than ever, and we’ve got a rising problem on our hands. Most video makers simply use music without permission and hope for the best. And this does work most of the time, but if you really wanna be safe, it’s best to either get permission from either the band or the record label of the song you’re hoping to use in your video, or work around the permission aspect in rather unique ways.

But all is not lost. In fact, it’s a good time to be making a BMX video with legally cleared music within. A really good time, thanks in part to the Internet. Yeah, it’s managed to crumble the recording industry, but through sites such as MySpace music, the Internet has also allowed for millions of musicians throughout the world to get their music out there for free. Say you’re making a video and have no clue about music clearance. Log onto MySpace, search for bands in your area on the music pages and check out some local music. Chances are, these bands are seeking exposure, and inclusion in a BMX video can only help. But remember to keep it small. Bigger bands with wider audiences aren’t necessarily seeking video exposure, so look for bands that don’t have a record label and don’t have over 3-5,000 friends. (If you’re a MySpace user, and who isn’t, those facts are easy to find.) Send the band a message through MySpace, explain your honest intentions, put every fact on the table, tell them that their bands’ inclusion in the video will help expose their music to a new audience and see what happens. More often than not, this simple approach works. But I must emphasize again that it only works with smaller, more unknown bands that are just getting off the ground. Don’t think you can legally get a Metallica song in your video for free, cause it won’t happen.

Another way in which the Internet can offer a treasure trove of free music is in the world of blogging. I’ll make an honest confession here. I was a hardcore kid, and I liked a million bands from a million different record labels that don’t exist anymore. The bands broke up, the record labels went out of business and the music became unavailable. Until the world of the blogger caught up and decided to blog about these records that no one could find anymore. Through sites such as Mediafire, Rapidshare, SendSpace and more that I’m probably forgetting, it’s possible to reconnect with and download music that’s long been out of print. Now this isn’t technically legal or permissible in video clearance, but if you’re using an Outburst song from the New York hardcore label Blackout! Records in your video, chances are you’re going to be safe and sound. (Outburst broke up in ‘96 and Blackout! hasn’t released a new record in three years.) I’ll give another example. The band’s name was Rotator Cuff. They were from Highland Park, NJ and they broke up in sometime in the mid ‘90s. They released one EP on Park N Ride Records from San Francisco, then disappeared. So the band is long gone, and the label is nowhere to be found on the Internet, but through a fan blog named Willfully Obscure, the EP is available for download. Again, it’s not technically legal, but I highly doubt that the band or the label will care much if one song from 1995 is used in a 2008 BMX Web vid that gets 8,000 views on Vimeo. Who knows, they might even be psyched that people are into their music? The key here is obscurity. And here’s some blogs to start off, which feature links to tons of other blogs with more obscure, out of print music:

Zen and the Art of Face Punching: http://zen-face-punch.blogspot.com/

    Willfully Obscure: http://wilfullyobscure.blogspot.com/

    I Could Die Tomorrow: http://icoulddietomorrow.blogspot.com/

    Used Bin Forever: http://usedbinforever.blogspot.com/

Check em out, download some music, explore the links and familiarize yourself with the world of forgotten bands and forgotten record labels. Again, it’s not technically legal to use without permission. But it’s definitely a lot safer than using a well known song from a well known band that could send you a cease and desist order.

Now I know that I haven’t even touched on huge pockets of music, such as hip hop, electronic, etc, etc. But take a rainy day and put some time aside exploring new or old, obscure music on the Internet. There’s more than you could ever imagine, and when your video is finally posted on TheComeUp, you can rest assured knowing that 50Cent isn’t going to be banging down your door because you never got permission to use one of his songs…

Edit: Dean Dickinson sent through this link to Killed By Death records, basically an MP3 dump for old, out-of-print punk singles. Really awesome stuff in there: http://www.kbdrecords.com/

And another edit: This one comes from Dig‘s resident ombudsman, Tim March: http://www.killyourpetpuppy.co.uk

  • OKC HALLOWEEN JAM

  • HB’s Jeremie Infelise (featured as a low pro in issue 67) sent over some words and photos from last weekend’s 2008 What? Jam at the Mat Hoffman’s Action Sports Skatepark (Mat Hoffman’s ASS) in Oklahoma City, OK. Read on for the lowdown. Words and pics by Jeremie and Tazz Hernandez.

Oh yeah, Halloween jam! I’ve never seen so many kids so eager to get to a Halloween jam that they forget to wear their costumes. The only people dressed up were the people who helped put on the jam. These kids weren’t psyched on candy or Halloween at all… the only scary thing about this contest was Nick Stout’s face. I take that back… watching everyone trying to “jam” for the street part of this shindig was by far the scariest thing. Four people at a time, on the same ramp… craziness. They smartened up in the bowls after Mark Maples and Terrance BMX went head to head nearly full speed. Maples had a gash the size of a pinky below his knee that he could open up a little bigger than a thumb. The Dang Dang made his presence known, as always, with his high airs and ridiculously tight hot topic pants. Ginger Drew won the bowl part of the jam which is no suprise.  Its his home park and he has the fastest and highest lines there. Jeremie Infelise (excite bike) was doing can cans… definite high light of the day. Kids were crying in the product toss, Steven Vernon was throwing handlebars 15 ft in the air into a 7 ft bowl at kids. Half the people entered in the contest didn’t ride. I don’t know what was going on there. Every kid had a good time though, and you could tell. Make sure you come out next year. And go to SAUCED afterwards. Thanks to everyone who helped put this jam on.

  • NEW DATA VIDEO

It starts with registration and practice at 2pm with the actual jam starting around 3-3:30 and going into the night. It costs $5 to enter the contest and there will be a $5 raffle for a bunch product from S&M, Fit, Volume, Demolition, Animal and Odyssey. There will also be a bbq (with veggie friendly offerings) and adult beverages for those who are of age. It’s gonna be real laid back and hopefully raise a good amount for Mike! So if you’re in the So Cal area, be sure to head out and support a worthwhile cause.

  • NEW FLY COLORS

  • Since it’s Halloween, I’m going to have to make a bad joke and say that Fly has several new ways to “dress up” your bike, which basically means that there are new colors for the Luna, Tierra, Campillo and Pantera line. The Luna is green/pistachio, Tierra is flat purple, Campillo is flat chocolate, and the Pantera is now available in my all-time favorite non-color, flat black. Check the Fly site for more info on all things. And sorry for the bad Halloween joke…

  • NIKE 6.0 BANKSGIVING ‘08

  • Nike 6.0 recently announced dates for the ‘08 round of the Banksgiving Jams. Two are planned, one east coast, one west coast, with guaranteed fun, food, riding and music for all. Starting in Toms River, NJ on November 15, the Banksgiving returns to Garrett Reynolds’ backyard, followed by Dennis Enarson’s house (pictured above) in San Diego, CA one week later (Nov. 22). Nate Wessel is responsible for the construction at both jams, so rest assured the ramps will be good. For exact locations and a chance to add to the rider-created jam playlist, hit up the Banksgiving site.

  • NEW KHE FRONT WHEEL

  • KHE sent over word about their new high-end Astral front wheel. The Astral wheel is built up using KHE’s Astral radial hub, but the press release is a bit confusing. It says that the hub is 32h, laced up to KHE’s new 36h Big-V rim using DT-Swiss butted spokes (now in BMX lengths by KHE.) So I’m not really sure if it’s a 32h or 36h wheel. Regardless of that though, the wheel looks sweet. Designed for brakeless riding, the total weight is 698grams (1.539lbs) and is available in black or blue.

Congrats guys!

  • SUPERSTAR IN THE US

  • Superstar BMX have two new ‘09 frames now available in the states. But if you wanna know more, check the Superstar site. And if you wanna purchase one in the US, check the Sidewall site to find your local dealer.
