  • ICE BANDAGE

  • posted 15 hours, 35 minutes ago
  • We got sent through some of these Ice Bandages and they seem like a pretty cool idea. All you do is rip open the pack, take out the bandage and it cools down in 10 minutes and lasts for 2 hours. It treats sprains and strains and would be perfect for rolled ankles and wrists, maybe even the odd swell-bow. They’re pretty cheap too at £3.90 per bandage. Here’s some info the guys sent over:

“Ice Bandage can be applied on all injuries that need cooling. The bandage applies a constant and equal pressure which prevents blood from gathering and reduces the swelling at the site of the injury.

Containing no harmful ingredients, Ice Bandage is ideal for treating sprains and strains to the ankle, wrist, elbow, hand, knee and back. Using the bandage to complete the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) method can speed up the healing process. Cooling an injury reduces the sensation of pain through the counter-irritant effect and can also slow down metabolism within the damaged tissue, reducing muscle spasm and inflammation. This reduction in pain, swelling, heat and redness effectively aids recovery.”

  • NEW FLYBIKES LEVER

  • posted 18 hours, 50 minutes ago

  • Flybikes have finished their brake lever and most distributors should have received them already, if not in the next few days. Fly have taken a long time perfecting this lever so take a look at some photos and specs:

-Forged and CNC machined. Same process used on our brakes so they are
really stiff and strong at only 66 grs. / 2.3lb.

-Oversized bushings that combined with the harder material eliminates
that annoying wobble on the lever that appears on some other levers.

-No barrel. Now that all the frames have barrels we don´t see the need
for that. since we don´t need that long section for the thread barrel
    we could make it smaller.

-It includes different accesories to have 4 different cable set ups
including adaptor for dragonfly style gyro cables.

-Colors are black, white, red, green and grey.

    Grips: Longnecks
    Bar ends: Odyssey Plastics
    Stem: Animal
    Brake Lever: Nope
    Brake: Foot
    Seat: United..shit’s beat though
    Seat Post: Demolition
    Clamp: Nope
    Cranks: Powerbites for life
    Sprocket: Odyssey Million Dollar
    Pedals: Odyssey Plastics
Chain: I think I have a 410 on there right now
Rear Wheel: Shadow Crayonspiracy cassette laced to a Sun Big Baller
Front Wheel: Odyssey Vandero laced to a Sun City Lite
Pegs: I’m not sure...maybe one Odyssey and one Animal?
    Hub Guard: FBM
    Rear Tyre: Odyssey Path P-lyte
Front Tyre: Odyssey Dirt Path p-lyte
    Bottle Cage: Bontrager
    Water Bottle: Camelback
    Weight of bike: Pretty light

    Modifications: None really

What is up with the water bottle cage? How did you get that to work?
I’ve been talking about a bottle cage for awhile now and we recently got the adapters in stock at the bike shop I work at so I finally did it. Drilled two holes in my frame, put in the adapters with the threads for the cage and boom there you have it. Shit is dialed.

    Describe your personal bike setup
    Chrome as f*ck.

Describe the contents of your personal bike tool bag.
I usually just carry a socket wrench and a 17mm socket with me in my camera bag, maybe some extra chain links and a tube as well.

What part do you wear through the quickest?
Tires, hub guards, and pegs. You’ve got to grind.

What part do you break most often?
Umm...spokes I guess. Chains too but not since I got a sprocket with a guard.

Do you patch flat tyres or get new tubes?
    New tubes.

Which parts are you paranoid about breaking?
None cause I never do anything cool anyway, plus the only time things break is when my bike misbehaves and gets dealt with.

Where do your parts go when you’re done with them?
I usually keep it around for when someone needs it.

Who builds your wheels? anything special about them?
I do. Not really, other than the front one being really chrome and badass.

    Cassette or freecoaster?
    Cassette cause freecoasters are gay.

    Kevlar bead or regular bead?
Doesn’t matter, they all wear out eventually.

    Plastic pedals or metal?
Plastics lately cause they’re cheap and hurt less.

  • RAPID RESPONSE: HARRISON BOYCE

  • posted 2 days, 14 hours ago
  • Name: Harrison Boyce

    Age: 25

    How are you?
Couldn’t be better! On tour with MacNeil… We are only a few hours into our first day and it’s already amazing!

    What’s new in your life?
Working on a bunch of design projects. Just got a whole new computer setup that I’m super psyched about. Moved from 3 computers to one… Trying to make my life as simple as possible. I got married a few months ago and that’s been amazing and I’ve also started doing way more freelance design work this year.

    Where are you right now?
Sitting on an airplane with Travis Sexsmith. David Lang is a few rows back and Jay Miron’s sitting next to some model chicks a few rows up. Chris Martindale should be sitting next to me right now, but he got turned around at the border last night!! We are on our way to Toronto for our Eastern Canada Tour… It should be a fun trip!!

How are things going over at MacNeil these days? I’d imagine you are pretty busy getting the all new line all designed and dialed in?
Yeah, we are working on all our 2010 stuff. Our 09 order was pushed back a bunch, so we are just getting all our new frames and new parts in stock in a few weeks. I’ve been working on getting all the 09 stuff online and to our distributors at the same that we are working on the 2010 stuff… So there’s definitely a lot going on right now!

When it comes to design, where do you look for inspiration?
For my design work, I look at a lot of photography and fashion stuff. I’ve been obsessed with the whole fashion world for the past year and can spend hours on the fashion photography blogs. I seem to spend less and less time on the design blogs, but more and more time on sites like FFFFound, JJJJound, Yimy Yayo, and other photos blog/type sites. Having a good crew of friends to throw ideas around with is super important for me, but I think the most important thing to do fir inspiration it to travel.

What about things with Defgrip? It seems like you guys have been working on quite a bit of original content these days?
Yeah! We’ve been trying to do as much original content as possible, focusing on the video interviews. We have been on a few filming trips over the past few months and we have a really dope lineup of new interviews that will be online soon. We all do Defgrip on our spare time, so it’s definitely hard to focus and spend a lot of time on Defgrip, but out of all my work it’s one of my favorite things to do… Maybe because we’ve been doing more editorial type stuff, so it’s almost like a break from graphic design for me.

What does your average daily routine consist of these days?
I work out of an office in my house, so I usually wake up with my wife Michaela around 8ish, drive her to work, grab some coffee, head back home and get into my work. I usually spend my mornings answering my emails and doing more of my “office” type work, like invoicing and stuff… I’ll spend some time going through my RSS feeds, Twitter, and any other websites that I usually check… Maybe do a post or two on Defgrip then get into my design work. I spend a lot of time on MacNeil stuff, so I’m usually on iChat with Darcy and Jay for most of the day. I go to the MacNeil offices on Thursdays, so we usually do all our planning and brainstorming when I’m out there and I’ll spend my time away from the office doing all the designing, concepts and website work.

Aside from MacNeil and Defgrip I do a lot of other freelance work and over the past few months, I’ve been working on A LOT of websites. To help my workload I’ve been working with my brother and he’s been doing all the backend and coding for me. It’s been really rad working with him because I can focus on the creative and functionality of all the sites and not have to worry about spending hours coding everything. I feel like I’m pretty knowledgeable when it comes to building websites, but I don’t think I’m the most efficient. Design and front end is where I should spend my time and working with him has not only made that possible, but I’m able to bring in a lot more work. So, with all my other projects, it’s pretty much just back and fourth with my brother thorough out the day, checking stuff off my list (the Things application has made my life so much more efficient!), and I try to get most of my work done before I pick Michaela up at 6ish. I have a really hard time not working, so after dinner, I’m usually back on the computer doing something until the late hours of the night.

You are also a real talented photographer. What kind of a camera set-up are you working with these days?
Thank man! I’ve been using the MacNeil Canon 1D Mk II for years. We just have a few shitty lenses and a Canon flash. I swear one day I’ll get my own digital setup, but right now, I’m way more into film point-and-shoot stuff. My latest camera is a Contax G2 and it’s been amazing. I shoot with a D-Lux 3 here and there and I have a few other film cameras.

Tell us something people might not know about you.
My mom used to be roommates with Bruce Springsteen and my dad is in a band with Allan White, the drummer from Yes.

What does 2009 have in store for you?
Well… It’s half way over, so I guess this summer, I have a bunch of MacNeil trips, lots of freelance work and we are going to try to keep doing more and more with Defgrip and our Originals series.

    Any plans for tonight?
David Lang got us on some list for a Red Bull party at Circa in Toronto. We are meeting up with Cory Beal and a bunch of guys from Toronto, so you know it’s going to be a good night!!

  • NIKE 6.0 BEATS GASOLINE

  • PRESS RELEASE

“The Nike 6.0 BMX team is fighting gasoline consumption by doing what they love: riding bikes. What’s your Beat Gasoline story?

Nike 6.0 has teamed up with Beat Gasoline to encourage youth to use the power of sport to beat gasoline. Gasoline itself isn’t the enemy. The enemy is its use. The Nike 6.0 BMX team is fighting global gasoline consumption by doing what they love: riding bikes. Not only does riding a bike reduce impact on the environment, the world is more interesting behind bars. Watch the 6.0 athletes story and share your own Beat Gasoline story by uploading a video to beatgasoline.com, illustrating how you use sport to power your life, rather than conventional fuel burning methods of transportation.

“When I’m on my bike cruising through the city, I feel in synch with the life of the city…hearing the sounds, meeting new people.” Says 6.0 BMX Athletes, Nigel Sylvester. “Being on a bike makes the world more interesting….plus it’s a low impact form of transportation that beats sitting in traffic any day.”

The Nike 6.0 BMX team is a crew of four diverse riders: Dennis Enarson, Garrett Reynolds, Nigel Sylvester, and Mike Spinner, who explore the world on bikes showcasing their talents in global competitions such as the Dew Tour, filming for BMX movies and capturing photos for Nike 6.0 ad campaigns. The Nike 6.0 will be showcasing their talents at the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro in Huntington Beach, July 23-26th.

Nike is rewarding the best Beat Gasoline video entries, based on viewer voting, with 6.0 product and also helping each entrant contribute to their charitable organization.  Each week (2) entries will receive a $100 Global Giving card and T-shirts. The grand prize winner of the competition will receive a Nike 6.0 prize pack and a $1,000 Global Giving card.

A lot of work to do, but everything is just for the well-being of the BMX-Sport, the Riders and the Fans, because we’re going to have a huge pleasure when on Friday the 10th of July, we are finally able to say: “LET THE GAMES BEGIN!”

Already registered riders get the possibility to practice on the new and virgin street course on Thursday, 9th of July at 12:00 am.”

    Pegs: Flybikes new pegs
    Rear tire: Flybikes Ruben 2.15
    Front tire: Flybikes Ruben 2.25
    Weight of bike: 11.5 kg

    Modifications:
Cut up brake lever, pieces of tube welded on the ends my bars to make it wider.

    Describe your personal bike setup:
Well, pretty much a long bike, big tires, tight chain, low seat, and kind of high bar.

Describe the contents of your personal bike tool bag.
All I need to take off all the parts of my bike is…. 6,5,4 mm allen key, 19mm tube tool a fly cobra tube.

What part do you wear through the quickest?
    Grips.

What part do you break most often?
    Spokes.

Do you patch flat tires or get new tubes?
It depends; if I have a cobra, I’ll go for a new tube.

Which parts are you paranoid about breaking?
    Forks and pedals.

Where do your parts go when you’re done with them?
To my girlfriend’s bike or to my friends in Malaga (right after I build a new bike they start to ask me what am gonna do with the parts when I get a new bike) hehehehe sweet!

Who builds your wheels? Anything special about them?
I do it by myself; I love to build wheels.

    Cassette or freecoaster?
Cassette forever. I don’t like that death point of the freecoaster when you start to pedal, and I like to pedal back when I’m going backwards.

Left side drive or right side drive?
I really don’t care, because these days the sprockets are so small that it’s hard to hit ‘em, but I would choose left hand if I got the chance.

    Kevlar bead or regular bead?
I got Flybikes Ruben tires, the steel wire ones. I don’t like too light bikes; I like to feel the rotation force of the wheels when I’m in the air.

    Plastic pedals or metal?
I ride metal pedals; I haven’t tried any plastic pedals yet. But I‘ll try ‘em some day. I guess that they’re gonna like me because I hit my legs a lot with the pins so plastic pins should be better for it!

  • CHICAGO DEW TOUR DAY 3

  • posted 5 days, 18 hours ago
  • The third day of the Chicago stop of the Dew Tour was nothing short of fun. The Park finals kicked off for the first part of the day. There were a lot of surprises to how everything played out. Daniel Dhers had a few crashes that threw off his whole day. Mike Spinner got flats in both of his runs taking him out of the contest. Dave Mirra came out to win. He still has his brakes off and was riding faster than anyone else on the course, throwing some of his biggest tricks coming through with a very clean second run to take the first place podium. Garrett Reynolds killed it with his Barspin and Tuck No Hander variations off everything for second place. Marcus Tooker put together some solid runs that landed him in third place for the day.

Dave Mirra went all out with the “Air Traffic Controller” also known as the 360 backflip tuck no hander.

The guys know how to have plenty of fun. Morgan Wade doing the worm after a crash during his run.

Brandon Dosch had a solid weekend of riding. Here he is with a super dipped 720.

Marcus Tooker with a Bike Flip.

Daniel Dhers had a few crashes that kept him from the podium, but it didn’t keep him from this 720 Tire Grab.

The podium with Dave Mirra in first, Garrett Reynolds in second, and Marcus Tooker in third.

The Vert prelims and finals took place later in the day. The riding got wild in the finals when Simon Tabron tried a 900 One-Foot One-Hander and looped out. Chad Kagy wasn’t messing around when he dropped in looking for the Double Flair. He over rotated and slammed to the ground, knocking himself out and requiring the medical staff to take him off the ramp on a stretcher for precaution. Chad was okay and appeared just before Jamie Bestwick dropped in for his final run. Jamie had crashed early in his first heat, leaving his last run to be the make or break for winning the event. With his insanely high airs and endless book of tricks he pulled it all together for a real smooth run that landed him in first place.

After the Park finals there was Vert prelims and finals.

Koji Kraft has a lot of fun doing what he does. He literally always has a smile on his face. He probably had one for this One-Hander One-Footer too.

It is always a treat to watch Dennis McCoy ride. 42 years old and clicking Turndowns.

Chad Kagy with a Superman Seat Grab Indian Air moments before crashing on a Double Flair.

Jamie went down early in his first run. Instead of jumping up to try and pull together a run with his time, he did a little demo on proper One-Handed Push Ups.

Kevin Robinson with a Tuck No-Hander Flair. After Chad had went down, Kevin pulled 9 consecutive Flairs in respect of Chad and to get the guys back in the game.

Right after Jamie killed his winning run, he came to check up on Chad who was watching from the side.

  • CHICAGO DEW TOUR DAY 2

  • posted 6 days, 17 hours ago
  • Day two was another very sunny and hot day. The venue was open to the public today with vendors all throughout the venue, along side the Taste of Chicago going on just down the street. Thousands of people were about watching Park prelims, Dirt prelims and finals. Park prelims got heated with so many of the biggest names in BMX fighting for the 9 open spots for finals. The top 12 riders will compete tomorrow (Saturday) to see who will come out on top and win the event. Dirt finals got wild with a few of the up and coming riders taking the top spots. Ryan Nyquist held on to his third place, with Brandon Dosch getting bumped from first down to second after Josh Hult came out of no where for the win. Saturday will feature Park finals, Vert prelims and finals.

Pat Laughlin also known as Big Daddy pulling together a solid X-Factor Flair during his run in Park prelims.

Brian Hunt was a crowd favorite with his solid riding along side some killer dance moves.

Rob Darden went down hard in his first heat with this trick. He pulled it smooth the second go at it.

Chris Doyle had some real solid runs with tricks like this 360 invert. It wasn’t quite enough to podium, but it makes for a real good photo every time.

Morgan Wade has some of the best tailwhip extension in BMX with this 360 double whip superman. He didn’t quite make it to finals but still rode well.

Josh Hult, the winner of the Dirt contest, had some wild moves like this 360 barspin to late downside whip.

The podium with Josh Hult taking first, Brandon Dosch taking second, and Ryan Nyquist taking third.

Check back tomorrow for the final day of the Chicago Dew Tour stop!

  • CHICAGO DEW TOUR DAY 1

  • posted 1 week ago
  • This is the view from where the contest is being held. In the heart of Chicago at Grant Park. It’s incredible to watch BMX with this as the back drop.

Yesterday was day one of the Dew Tour stop in Chicago. This is a unique contest for the Dew Tour because of three things. This is the first time the Dew Tour has come to Chicago, it’s the first BMX only stop in its history, and also the first time they are doing the street contest. The first day of the stop consisted of Dirt Open Qualifiers, Park Open Qualifiers, and the first day to film for the Street guys. It was very sunny and very hot all day with a small break from a quick rain shower towards the end of the day. Here are a few photos and words to go along with it.

While sitting in the stands taking a break from everything, I noticed the Dig tattoo on the back of this kids arm. Zack Newman (spelling?) repping hard!

Fuzzy Hall and his team making a few small adjustments before Open Qualifiers started up.

The view from the top of the roll-in to the dirt course. About an hour after this photo was taken, some people from Dew Tour were letting all the photographers know we couldn’t be in any of the towers. Hopefully this doesn’t get me into any trouble

I forgot the names of basically everyone yesterday, so I apologize. A big tuck no hander over the second jump in the set.

Catfish is one of the busiest guys at the Dew Tour stops. He can be found filming for Fuel TV, announcing the events, or shining people in the eyes with laser pointers at any given point in time during the day.

There were over 50 people competeing for the 13 spots for prelims today, yesterday. This was just a quick snap of Harry Main blasting the quarter. There was a backflip barspin to barhop done yesterday on the park from a unknown rider who made it to the prelims today also.

Today there will be the Vert Open Qualifier, Park and Dirt prelims, the second day of Street filming, Dirt Finals, and a Lupe Fiasco concert to finish off the day. Expect some photos and words tomorrow!

  • TIGHT SET-UP!: THE RANDOM WRENCH V.2

  • posted 1 week, 1 day ago

  • Interview with Josh Suhre and Sherwin Ghaffarkhan...

Why a V2 of the infamous Random Wrench?
Josh: The original Random Wrench was designed a few years before Sherwin and I were working at DK. I think the original idea was great. We took some of the ideas and feedback from over the years and employed it into a matured, more restrained form.

Sherwin: Since the first Random Wrench was designed several years ago, products have changed and thus so should the products used to maintain them.

Was there a goal when you set out to redesign the RW?
Josh: On my side of the design process, I was focused initially on the ergonomics and aesthetics of the form, then the information design and packaging. We wanted something in the end that would decisively be an improvement over the popular original version.

Sherwin: It seems in the end, the goal is to have it be something that you would use yourself. In this case that you can use to fix your bicycle or fend off zombies…

Do you have a specific design process (start with sketches, or research, then work your way forward)?
Josh: Personally, I began with research about feedback on the original Random Wrench, tool forms, market competition, and general purpose of the tool. From there I begin sketching some forms, working with Sherwin to develop something we are both happy with. Once a prototype is in our hands, we analyze it, test it, and make the appropriate changes.

Sherwin: There is a specific approach that I take when designing something.  To keep things short:  1. Problem/Need identification 2. Research/Analysis to fully define the first statement 3. Define a goal, so there is something to work towards.4. Then start sketching and working on concepts…share ideas with Josh to come up with a design. 5. Draw and have it Prototyped. 6. Test/Evaluate the prototype. 7. Mix thoroughly, rinse, repeat.

Are the sockets and keys it comes with interchangeable (like if i run a different size can i swap something out and have it fit generally in side the wrench?)
Sherwin: Yes, the Random Wrench is interchangeable.  It can fit a socket as large as a 19 mm.

What role did form and ergonomics play in the development?
Josh: One of the most important aspects for me was redesigning the form for the V2 so it would be easier to carry with when riding (or conform to your backpack compartments). I think the modest / simple form accomplishes that. In regards to ergonomics, we slimmed the handle down from one of the prototypes to have a circumference that was more ergonomically appropriate for the tool’s target user group. The end cap was designed to be a more functional and integrated part of the tool’s form, offering a spoke wrench with three sizes.

Is there a significant weight difference between the RW V1 and V2?
Sherwin: I have no idea? Take a poop then work on your bicycle will be the quickest way to drop weight if you are concerned about that while maintaining.

Anything worth mentioning about the metal/materials?
Sherwin: Not really. No need to bog people down with what they don’t care about.

    Anything about RW V2 graphics?
Josh: I felt it was appropriate to develop a logo for the Random Wrench V2, since it has become somewhat of an iconic tool in BMX. Similar to the original, I created informational graphics about how the sockets and keys go together inside the form. The logo and informational graphics were laser etched on the exterior of the tool.

What’s the story with the “hang tag” style packaging.
Josh: The concept behind the hang tag was to provide information about what the new V2 Random Wrench offers to the user. The tag is DK branded for recognition, and provides the opportunity for interaction in a retail environment. The customer can unfold and explore the progressing information within the panels of the tag. The hang tag provides a more exclusive visual presence for the product in a retail environment.

How much does a V2 cost?
    Sherwin: It retails around $32.99

Check out www.dkbicycles.com for more info on the DK Random Wrench V2. Available through all major mail order and bike shops.

  • ‘Santa Cruz’ Jordan.

    DATE: 29-30th May
    LOCATION: San Jose, CA
WORDS AND PHOTOS: Kyle Emery Peck

After watching a series of web videos displaying the progression in construction of the first ever all wooden double contest, starring Nor Cal legend Ryan Nyquist, the spirit behind his eyes persuaded me to get a media pass and shoot some photos of the 2 day event. On the first day, I ended up getting down to San Jose pretty early, and mostly watched practice. The bigger name guys were getting through the 8 pack of doubles almost every try, and there were also a bunch of locals committed to getting through the large, intimidating doubles. One local ironically named Endo tagged the landing from the roll in and got knocked out on his first run. It ended a lot of peoples spirit in competing in the contest. As the sun got lower in the sky i took a few snaps of the brave “warriors” catching air and whipping it out.

That night I ended up crashing in the basement of sjbmx.com blogger Beerman’s parent’s house. There were no windows and no lights on in the morning so I had absolutely no idea what time it was, but when we all got up, we had started at a more than decent hour. The qualifying didn’t start till 3 or something, so I rode a little street plaza style park a couple blocks away for a bit. When I returned for the qualifying round, I remember MC Grotbags on the mic announcing the riders in each group, and a bunch had decided not to enter. I think it was partly due to Endo crashing the day before, and sight of other people getting wrecked. By the time finals got around, I was running around trying to get pictures from different angles of each colossal jump. Finals ended up going rather fast, some highlights of the day included Joel Husely getting completely kicked out back flipping the first double and bringing it back to hit the rest of the pack. I also witnessed a first, a cliffhanger on the last double. It took the dude a few tries to get it all the way extended but he got it, and I snatched a picture of it. I also saw a few new tricks from Anthony Napolitlan. He cranked out a vicious 360 triple tailwhip, and 360 indian. The winner TJ Ellis, rode well all day, his highlights included boosty front flips, nothings to tailwhip, and backflip no foot can can.

All in all I’m happy I went, I saw a bunch of new tricks that I didn’t know were even possible, and no one was taken out too hard, except for Endo. I think this contest really humbled a lot of riders. The jumps were really made for ‘warriors’. -Kyle Emery Peck

    WORDS: Paulo Martins

The Deserto Jam/ Corroios, Portugal Street Jam went down this past Saturday. Besides the really hot day (+35º C) a conservative estimate was about 50 people showed up for the day-long jam (that’s a lot of people for a real street only jam, over here) on the outskirts of Corroios, Alto do Moinho, and Sobreda (skate park for the prizes/gifts deliverance), where the streets with really good rails, parking lots, and banks are in abundance, and riding distance from one another. We even rode the Corroios Swimming pool building, doing wall rides, grinds, and other crazy stunts, without security guards to shut down the crazyness, a lot of people from the pool came outdoors just to see what a bunch of crazy dudes where doing outside. Tons of crazy riding went down, people sent themselves from rails, gaps, tech stuff, drink stuff, at the end no one got broke, a lots of beers, water and Red Bulls went down, but no one got drunk. At the end a few ones got giveaway prizes from Dig and Green Eyes Clothing, and probably everyone left with a smile on their face (except maybe Guga after his ass had an encounter with the rail...) Check out the photos for a glimpse into some of the riding what went down. Thanks to NC, the organizer, DIG BMX and Green Eyes Clothing for the gifts and to RED BULL for the fresh drinks all day long. - Paulo Martins

  • posted 1 week, 4 days ago
  • The BMX Worlds in Cologne, Germany are coming up soon (10-12 July) and the list of riders attending is already pretty wild. For more info and tickets go to: www.bmxworlds.de

Here’s what the organizers had to say:

“Many of this year’s contestants weren’t even born when the first BMX contest took place at the Jugendpark Köln in 1984. This year’s line-up represents the cream of the crop of finest BMX riding. Whether young guns, established pro’s or seasoned veterans, with a line-up like this anything is possible.

Next to the top-athletes from the ROCKSTAR Team, Ryan Nyquist, Dennis Enarson, Josh Harrington, Cory Nastazio, Rob Darden (all USA),Alistair Whitton, Ben Wallace (both UK), Colin Mackay and Luke Parslow (both AUS), there is also Daniel Dhers (VEN), Mark Webb, Harry Main, Zach Shaw (all UK), Ricardo Laguna (USA) and Adam Kun (HUN), who will make each of the 5 disciplines a thrilling mixture of atheltic showmanship and skill.

Especially exciting, however, is the fact this year’s vert contest is packed with athletes of only the best kind. With Jamie Bestwick, we have one of the most successful X-Games participants of the last years, who made it across the big pond for this year’s Worlds. Bestwick, who moved from the UK to the USA, will surely know how to keep it exciting between him and Simon Tabron (UK), who is also going for the title. Joining the list of aspiring world champions is Francisco x201E;Coco” Zurita from Chile (2nd place at the BMX 2008) and Vert maniac Ben Snowden (USA). All fans of BMX Vert action, beware!

But not to forget, the girls want the title just as much. We have over 20 female riders competing in 2 disciplines, Park and Flatland. Corey Coffey (USA), Irina Sadovnik (AT) and Rebecca Berg (GER) are top notch, when it comes to international female BMX riding.

Last not least, legendary 80’s Haro Freestyle team will deliver one of their furious performances. Especially among older BMX fans, Ron Wilkerson, Brian Blyther and Dave Nourie enjoy as ‘special status’ as BMX’s old school elite.
Mike Dominguez’s guest appearance will put a smile on the face of Bob Haro, founder of the team and BMX freestyle icon. And just like Bob, do yourself a favor and don’t miss the show!”

Hello gypsy friends. The trip was sick, I hadn’t laughed that much in a long time. The van was running strong, we burned about 75 gal of veg. We were choreographing some doubles riding, and there were a couple slight collisions. There were many duels with sling shots and paint balls. No one has lost an eye yet. Instead of showering we stopped at any body of water to have a rinse, gypsy style. All the other crews were awesome. It was definitely the working class BMX scene on the trip. -Clint Reynolds

We should probably start out with your biggest news. You are going to be having surgery on your back to correct some issues. How did you hurt your back? Do you have any idea of what the surgery will be like?
A while ago I hurt my back really bad and couldn’t walk for couple weeks and was in terrible pain. I got through that and did loads of rehab and got myself back into riding shape. It seems like its never really been completely together though. Ever since I’ve felt like if I pump too hard my back will give out. I hurt it again just a few weeks ago. I don’t know if its new, or the same thing, but its been pretty bad lately. I’m reduced to laying around and maybe getting a little exercise for a hour or two and paying for that with lots of pain.

I’m scheduled for a spinal fusion where they remove the ruined disc and instead use screws and plates to bolt two vertebrae together. Its pretty intense surgery, but also fairly routine. The only thing I’m really not looking forward to is 6 month recovery time.

Do you have insurance to help cover your costs for this operation? It seems like BMX has that problem.
I didn’t have insurance when I lost my spleen and the bills got up to like $44,000 by the end. I’ve stayed on insurance ever since. Insurance is such a huge headache though. I’ll still have to pay like $12,000 in the end. Its really tough to win with insurance companies thats for sure! But, its way better then it could be. I’m hoping to sell my house so that I can catch up on all these bills and stuff.

You will be off the bike for six months. What will you be doing with your time off the bike? I’d imagine you will get to know your couch pretty well.
Yeah, right now its a drag. Its hard to sit or stand for any length of time. That kind of eliminates traveling or doing much. Even sitting around and drawing is kind of hard. I feel kind of dead in the water till I have the surgery. Afterwards I hope to focus everything i have on rehab. I really want to ride! I don’t know though… 6 months?!?! So long. I want to make another zine, do some drawing and possible even take some classes at the college near my house. It just depends on how and when I can start moving around.

How do your sponsors feel about you not being able to ride? Will there be any changes at all until you are back on your bike?
They all know that injuries are part of BMX. Its a bummer for everyone invovled of course… I want to ride and they want me riding, but its just the way it goes. I’m lucky really, my riding career has been pretty injury free (knock knock).... or at least “major” injury free. I think of guys like Joe Rich who went through like 3 different six month long knee surgeries and I don’t know how he could handle it.

Do you have any other sponsor news involving you other than above?
No. I’m pretty content where I am and I really haven’t worried about finding new ones or anything. Maybe I can talk my doctor into sponsoring me or something… that would be sweet.

Do you think things will be different in six months when you can get back on your bike? Will you be taking it a little easier or hopefully get back to full strength?
Have to wait in see. I know what its like to feel rusty and what a head game that is to get through. You can get through it fast, but it seems like forever. I hope to be in good shape through rehab and stuff, but riding shape and having your riding skills down just takes riding time and there’s no way around it.

A lot has changed in BMX since you have started. You were featured in the first issue of Dig. If you had to go back to any point in your career to pick as your favorite. When would you go back to?
I’m happy where I am (even despite my current state). I do miss my days of living near Posh and feeling so at home on dirt. I do miss the feeling of knowing my bike so well.

Now that you have had quite a bit of time away from running Terrible One, do you have any desire to start another brand of any form?
A little bit… sometimes. I don’t know… I have ideas and stuff running through my head that I’d like to create, but so many aspects of business (sales calls, accounting) I don’t miss at all. At least now I can give myself a good reality check when those fantasies start running through my mind.

Alright, enough with BMX. How has your art been coming along? Have you been working on anything special lately? Do you ever sell your work?
I haven’t been doing anything. Just sort of preoccupied lately with pain management. I wouldn’t say I’m in agonizing pain or anything, but there’s enough that I find it very difficult to concentrate on anything. I never have sold any I don’t think… I don’t know....  Its never very serious for me. Just something I do once in a while some of the time.

How about your music. Are you working on any new songs, full albums, touring, or anything like that?
Haven’t played at all lately. Same as above. Wearing a heavy bass is hard on me at the moment. I’m a sad sack just drooling at the TV lately. Ha Ha!

Speaking of touring, did you ever go on that cross country road trip you had planned?
I started to, but on my first day camping way up in northern Michigan it snowed and was 23 degrees. Instead I went and spent a while in Cleveland to feel that place out. I had planned to be on my trip now, but alas, here I am.

How are the dogs? I think the last time we talked a few months ago you had just got a new pup.
Dogs are well. They are keeping me company and making sure I don’t spend the whole day laying around. I got to get them out and about at least a little bit each day.

Do you have any plans for tonight?
    Nope…

To finish this out. Where do you see yourself in six months?
Who knows… hopefully feeling healthy, pain free and RIDING!

  • HELPING BMX STAR STEPHEN MURRAY STAY STRONG AND MARCH FORTH!

Action sports street-wear company March Forth steps up to the plate to help raise money for the Stay Strong Stephen Murray foundation and remind everyone to Stay Strong and March Forth!

Los Angeles, California-- The March Forth Supply Company has collaborated with the Stay Strong for Stephen Murray foundation this month to help raise money for paralyzed BMX super star Stephen Murray. The Limited Edition “March Forth, Stay Strong” for Stephen Murray graphic tee will be issued this week to promote a positive way of life and serve as a reminder to March Forth and Stay Strong! A portion of the proceeds will go to the Stephen Murray foundation.

March Forth Supply Co. started in 2003 as an apparel-driven reminder to focus on your dreams, and move forward with what you are most passionate about in life. “This is a perfect opportunity to help out in the community and industry with our positive message” says owner and founder Wes DeSoto. With offices in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Baltimore, March Forth sponsors athletes in Bmx, Surf, Skate, as well as bands and local artists. Serving as inspiration and a solid cornerstone in the action sports lifestyle.

Helping people find inspiration and motivation can sometimes be a difficult task. Heading into the 2007 Dew Action Sports Tour, former BMX dirt jumping star Stephen Murray’s back was against the wall. After setting the action sports world ablaze in 2001 with his gold medal-winning performance at the X-Games, his career lost momentum. As the bills piled up, Murray sought to reverse his fortunes with a huge performance in June 2007, only to suffer a catastrophic accident that left him a quadriplegic. Read more on Stephens Murray at http://www.staystrongapparel.com.

March Forth Supply Company will be accompanying Stay Strong Apparel next week at the first Dew Tour BMX event in Chicago on June 26 and 27 and will be releasing the tee for purchase at the Stay Strong vendor booth. This First Dew Tour Event Marks 2 years from when Stephens Crash First happened.  The tee will also be available for purchased online at the March Forth website: MF34.com. Other supporters that will carry the tee are Dan’s Comp , 5050 BMX , and Suburban Shred.

    Describe your personal bike setup:
It’s pretty stock, always a mess; I never work on anything so it’s usually a huge pile of shit.

Describe the contents of your personal bike tool bag.
Whatever is in my roommate’s car. I don’t own any tools. Thankfully Ryan at Kore bike shop in Tempe lets me use his.

What part do you wear through the quickest?
    Grips, tires, back wheels.

What part do you break most often?
I haven’t broken a bike part in years.

Do you patch flat tires or get new tubes?
    New tubes; thanks Kore!

Which parts are you paranoid about breaking?
Forks! If your forks break you’re pretty much dead.

Where do your parts go when you’re done with them?
    My roommates.

Who builds your wheels? Anything special about them?
Ryan at Kore builds ‘em. Nothing special.

    Cassette or freecoaster?
    Cassette; forward is faster.

Left side drive or right side drive?
    Right.

    Kevlar bead or regular bead?
Kevlar because that’s just what was available last time I got new tires. I don’t have a personal preference.

    Plastic pedals or metal?
Metal!  I understand that plastic is cheaper, but for how much you have to replace them the cost evens out over time. Plus, the Trailmix pedals rule.

“Hi everyone! I know that many of you couldn’t watch this video because before you only could watch it in USA but now you can watch it here and i will explain you what is about ...
A few months ago I had the opportunity to do a program called “First Hand” for FUEL TV (it’s a chanel where they only show Skate, BMX, Snowboard, Motocroos, Wakeboard, ...) I was stoked because when I am in the USA I like to watch this chanel and I thought that the “First Hand” was a great one. The program is just about a few days of your life, at home or in a trip… this programs are very entertain because there is nothing set up so anything can happen… we just plan to go to a couple of places and a camera guy comes with us to capture the best moments of whatever that happen in those days.
The program was waiting for me to say where and when I wanted to start. Then one day that I went to California with my friend Sami from Malaga I thought that it could be a good moment to start filming for my First Hand. I got on touch with the camera guy (Mike Manzoori) to see if he was able to come with us and in a few days later we were on it. At first I was a kind of worried of what to do but then I thought “this is what it is so it will be what it is “ and we had really good fun days because we had not idea of what we were going to do, all kind of things happened and we all have really very good memories from that trip.

The program is divided in 3 episodes…
I hope that you like it and motived you to go on a road trip.
Not much more!...enjoy and have fun!”

  • T1 FREAKY FRIDAY 6-12

  • posted 3 weeks ago
  • This week’s Terrible One Freaky Friday:

Mr Paul Buchanan… has had quite a legacy thus far. Most people only know Paul through stories, rumors, and chance sightings. “ I heard that Paul was at such and such spot and did this ! “… I’ve even heard some pretty funny stuff regarding how some people think he’s just a myth. But to Paul, he’s just living his life each day as he chooses… I could go on and on about Paul, but I’ll just go back to this day for now. This photo was taken sometime around April / May 2003 during the T1 World Trip. We had driven all night to get to Marseille, France. We had nowhere to stay so we pulled over on the side of the road a long the coast in the early AM. I remember some of us were crashed out in the van, someone was on the sidewalk, and Paul secluded himself even more by sleeping on the next level that stepped down from the sidewalk. He was fast asleep when something that he heard awoke him at the last minute. He popped his head up just in time… It was the city street cleaners with a high pressured hose cleaning off the sidewalk. Paul’s spider senses had saved himself a good soaking… A couple hours later we were riding the skatepark. I can remember having just learned corner airs myself a few months earlier. And the only ones I had ever seen done were on a bowl corner or in a swimming pool. I had always liked seeing them but only ever thought of them on a certain level of what was possible. Then, in true Paul style, he saw this set up at Marseille and proceeded to do what he does best. And that’s bringing his ideas and what he sees, to life.  When I look at this picture now, I think I’m almost even more amazed. It was so unexpected, and he did it like it was nothing. But that’s Paul for you… and those stories that you may hear exist for a reason…

Weight of bike: Ah, no clue. It’s not heavy; I know that.

    Modifications:
Cut my bars like an inch on each side; that’s it.

    Describe your personal bike setup:
It’s pretty much been the same since I was 16, except for the freecoaster, and a couple days ago I put my bike together and tried the brakeless thing; now I know why all the kids do it.  I just feels much cleaner and barspins feel so good without a lever, but I am still not sure if I will run it brakeless.  We will see.

Describe the contents of your personal bike tool bag.
Right now it’s just an adjustable wrench; lost all my other ones.

What part do you wear through the quickest?
My brake cable if I have a brake on; doing barspins a lot wears it out.

What part do you break most often?
I am pretty easy on parts; can’t even really remember the last part I broke.

Do you patch flat tires or get new tubes?
    New tubes.

Which parts are you paranoid about breaking?
Pedaling hard an having the free-coaster give out on me, and the chain.

Where do your parts go when you’re done with them?
Mostly hand them off to friends.

Who builds your wheels? Anything special about them?
They come built so I am lucky, but if not, the bike shop does it.

    Cassette or freecoaster?
Freecoaster.  I have had it on for about 2 years and it’s not like I am rolling backwards all the time.  When I do want to do something backwards, the coaster just makes it more fun, I think.

Left side drive or right side drive?
    Right side drive.

    Kevlar bead or regular bead?
I just stick to regular tires; just what I always ran.

    Plastic pedals or metal?
Metal; just what I have always ran.
