UNUSED COVERS & THE ART OF EDITING
When most people see the word “Editing,” they automatically think it’s related to the words within the magazine. To a degree, that is true, but editing a BMX magazine by and large comes down to photo selection and even graphic design.
By that, we mean that Will [Smyth] an Ricky [Adam] sit around the office, sifting through piles of photos and carefully selecting every photograph that graces the pages of Dig. And that process is no easy task. As photo editors, each detail of every photo is analyzed, examined and scrutinized. I’ve seen beautifully composed photos get turned down from printing simply because a rider’s foot is not correctly seated to the pedal. And that’s just the photos within the magazine. Covers of each issue of Dig are a whole new ball game. And even if the cover photo is apparent to the photo editors, there’s still a million design choices for Will to make, including color selection and cover blurbs among others.
This is a random selection of covers that almost made the cut, but for some reason, never made it to the print stage of the magazine. Enjoy…
