"Over the hill" is a common phrase in Santa Cruz used to refer to the 20-30 minute drive over the winding and often heavily trafficked Highway 17 into San Jose. For many locals, San Jose might as well be the other side of the world. "Over the hill" is also an expression used to describe someone as passed their prime. A few weeks shy of turning 37 and still riding BMX, I sometimes feel this way as the sessions get shorter, my muscles get more sore, and the time to ride gets fewer and far between. However, the last two years have left me very energized to ride as a way to maintain friendships, fulfill goals, and bring positivity to a world that seems to get bleaker by the day. This video celebrates the many trips over the hill by either myself or my riding homies that live on the other side, and to appreciate the greater world outside of our respective bubbles. Finally, the passing of our beloved BMX brother, Jeff Murphy, further helped me respect the precious moments we create on our bikes, as well as the love the BMX community brings to help us through even some of the darkest times.
