It’s the sad news we hoped we’d never have to share with you but our 2019 DIG Rider Of The Year Pascal Lafontaine has passed away.

His strength and courage in his fight against cancer has been both humbling and inspirational. Our heartfelt thoughts and love go out to his friends and family from everyone at DIG and the wider BMX community. Here's a reminder of his incredible final video part and look at some of the tributes that have been paid to him from across the BMX world.

His Mother released this statement yesterday:

"My son Pascal Lafontaine left us yesterday afternoon. He left peacefully surrounded by his family. He fought his cancer with exceptional and extraordinary courage. He continued to receive treatment despite the great fatigue and pain that would cause him. He didn’t want to leave this life that he cherished so much.

We, his family, would like to thank all the people who have given Pascal words of encouragement and support during his last five years of fighting. Let’s remember that due to his cancer, Pascal suffered an amputation of his leg in 2015. He would have been 28 years old on July 20th." - Pierrette Tetreault

Just over a month ago Pascal had posted about being honoured to receive a letter of congratulations for his achievements in BMX from the Minister of Culture for Quebec.

Mr Lafontaine,

Allow me to take a few minutes of your time to sincerely congratulate you for being awarded the title of ‘Rider of the Year’ by the prestigious DIG Magazine earlier this year.

This recognition is the result of your determination and commitment towards this sport. Your story is one of inspiration and extraordinary resilience. You are a role model for young Quebec athletes. Your success shines a light on Boucherville. You make us proud!

I wish you the best of luck for the rest of your sporting career, and hope that you will reach the objectives you set yourself. I also wish you great courage in your fight against your illness. I sincerely hope that you will soon be on the mend.

Sincerely,

Nathalie Roy Minister of Culture and Education, Quebec.

Felt weird to officialy sell my last bmx bike ever today...Bmx brought me to so many places, met so many peoples from this sport and totaly based my entire life around it. I always wanted to ended it on a better note than a cancer but its fair to say that I enjoyed every second of it. #happyending #bmx

Rest In Peace, Pascal Lafontaine. Pascal battled cancer for longer than any of us should ever have to. Despite losing his leg in 2015, he returned to BMX and produced one of the best videos of 2019 (which you should go re-watch) and was honored by @digbmx as their Rider Of The Year. Pascal wasn’t too vocal on social media about his health, but he made a post in early June about selling “his last BMX bike ever”…alluding to the fact that he believed he only had a short time left. Unfortunately, he was correct, as he passed on yesterday surrounded by his loved ones. Our condolences to his friends and family; there’s no doubt that Pascal was an inspiration to many of us. Ride in peace. There’s a statement from Pascal’s mother on the site, if you’d like to read further. Photo: @pierre.gauthier/@digbmx

Pascal Lafontaine - one of the most inspirational riders in BMX history - has died after his long battle with cancer. Pascal never let anything - even losing his leg to the disease - slow him down. He opened the BMX world's eyes to what's possible and the importance of pushing forward. Our sincere thoughts and condolences go out to Pascal's family and friends.

It’s with an heavy heart I’m typing this. In the past 10 years we had the chance to share a strong passion for BMX, it made us closer than I ever been to anybody. He helped me become a better personne by his fearless attitude, something to be admired in his character. In the past month, his condition worsen as we were working together on a book documenting his last ride 2018/2019. What he accomplished with what he had to overcome was nothing short of a miracle. Today his mom called to tell me Pascal finally left us. I’m completely floored. Man, there is so many things I’d like to tell him one last time, how much of an incredible human he was. Rest in peace my friend, we love you so much. ♥️ #pascallafontaine
