One Man Show 3 | Urban Wander

Weird & Revered

19 Dec 2024

Vdeo by Justin Schwanke

One man, one bike, one camera, and one tripod... Those are the ingredients for Justin Schwanke’s self-filmed BMX video series, One Man Show.

“In contrast to my previous self-filmed release, Township Tour, which explored rural spots, Urban Wander shifts its focus to the city. You might expect the hustle of urban life to dominate this project, but it doesn’t. When I’m filming alone, I seek solitude. The hours I choose to ride and the spots I choose to visit are carefully selected to minimize human interaction. Filmed between 2022 and 2024, Urban Wander documents my (mostly) solitary experiences in the industrial parks of Edmonton, Alberta; schools of Abbotsford and Port Coquitlam, British Columbia; drainage ditches of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and alleyways of Montpellier, France. This project reflects how riding and self-filming remain a meditative and deeply personal form of BMX for me. While the social aspects of BMX bring me joy, sometimes I need to withdraw and embrace introversion—a performer of one to an audience of none.” - Justin Schwanke
